Drink. She obeyed automatically. She didn’t have enough blood left circulating through her body to be able to think about why she shouldn’t. The man said to drink, so she drank. She leaned forward and sealed her mouth over the wound awkwardly, working to get the liquid into her mouth. It wasn’t as easy as simply drinking. Maybe if she had a straw to stab into the wound like a Capri-Sun. The thought filtered through her mind as the first taste hit her tongue.

She didn’t stop, her pulls becoming stronger the more she fed. She became stronger the more she fed. The power of it coursing through her, energizing her. It didn’t dull down her senses like the alcohol she was so used to consuming. In fact, she felt clearer than she had in forever. She felt like she could almost feel the alcohol being pushed away by this new drug. Incompatible.

Pain. Memories flooded her. All the hurt she’d been doing her best to bury, to drown within her the way it tried to drown her, came resurfacing. This wasn’t right. She was looking for better, not worse. She tried to pull away. Thought of it. Wanted to with every part of her being, and yet she couldn’t. Something more primal, stronger than her complete need to bury her feelings, was in control of her now. She kept drinking.

Her head began to buzz. A hangover to end all hangovers coming way too soon. She tore her mouth away, finally, and spat the last of the blood out of her mouth, trying to get rid of it. It was wrong. How had she let him talk her into this? It was killing her, she could feel it. It was pulling her apart from the inside out, filling her with all of the pain that she was trying to hide from and amplifying it. “What’d you do to me?” The drunken slur was gone, filled instead by a pained croak. The words felt like shards of glass coming out of her throat and now that she had some strength in her she made a desperate, but useless, attempt to get away from him.

Cosimo took a deep breath as lips closed around the wound, as Kit took the blood that he had told her to take. She did not hesitate. She drank, until she could drink no more – until that pain took over and she the turn began. Cosimo was not a heartless man, but perhaps he wasn’t as patient as he thought he was. Somewhere in his mind, he told himself this was what she deserved for being so damned obstinate.

Ininterrotto, he spat, native tongue coming to the fore as he lifted a hand to his neck. Although they came away bloody, he could feel the wound healing already. He could also feel a weariness stealing over his limbs, the thirst slowly growing within. She had taken a lot – blood that he would have to replace. He could do it later. Kit would have to do it later. They could do it together.

”Stop,” he said again, this time in English. He grabbed at Kit’s hands and tried to force her to still. ”You would not sober. You would not listen to me. If you will have sat down with me with coffee, I will have told you that this would happen,” he said. It wasn’t really all as dramatic as that. If he’d had the patience he could have continued with Kit, forced her to sit down and drink the coffee, and to listen to what he had to say. Instead, he’d rushed into it. And now he had to do what he could to get her to calm down. It probably wouldn’t be easy, the worse the pain got.

”Come back to the room. We cannot stay on the street,” he said. He did have his own space, away from Sanctuary, to which he could take Kit. But it would be too far away. It was all the way up in Cherrydale.

”Your body, it is dying. It is changing. It will hurt, but when it is done you will feel better than you ever have before,” he said, enthusiasm gleaming in his eyes. It definitely wasn’t something to turn one’s nose up at, never getting sick again. Never getting a fever, or hayfever, or suffering from any kind of allergy. To feel always so strong, like one could conquer the world – at least, he hoped that Kit would see it that way.

“Oh god.” This wasn’t a hangover. His words repeated over and over in her mind as things became momentarily clear before going all out of whack again. Dying. She was dying all because of him. She’d drunk his blood as if that was completely natural. Back when she’d spent her days sober, she never would have gone near this situation. Never would have put her mouth on some random person, ingesting their blood. The thought made her want to vomit; the rolling feeling in her guts made her think it wasn’t entirely out of the question that she was going to. It felt like acid, twisting and turning inside of her.

A scream ripped its way out of her throat as she bent over, her arm instinctively wrapping around her stomach as if it had some hope of calming the storm within her. She gagged. The pain enough to make her throw up even without the inner storm of her stomach and yet nothing came out, just a painful dry heave like action. All it served to do was increase Kit’s pain. The entire situation was one big ball of pain.

He wanted her to go back inside. To kill her quietly? To watch her suffer where they wouldn’t be disturbed? She hoped it was the first. That brief flare of I don’t want to die was gone, demolished by the pain of her dying. Changing. She wondered if injecting boiling hot water into him would make his body betray him the way hers was currently betraying her. She couldn’t fathom a future in which she survived this. It just wasn’t possible. This was the sort of pain that killed, that a body just… gave up fighting.

A headline flashed through her mind Local resident, Kathleen Best, found dead in motel parking lot. Enough alcohol found to kill a horse. Her parents would be so proud. She’d been planning to lunge towards him before that horrifying thought went through her mind. She couldn’t let that happen.

The muscles in her legs barely complied to her demands as she made her way back towards the room. They felt both heavy and like they were made of rubber at the same time. Pain skyrocketed through her muscles with each step. She was going to pass out, she could feel it. It was her last thought before her legs gave out and she fell forwards, her face coming up fast towards the harsh pavement below her.

Passing out was not entirely unexpected. It didn’t always happen, but in Cosimo’s experience it happened quite a lot. It was how he was able to save Kit from a broken nose or a chipped tooth. Before her face could hit the pavement he’d caught her, hauled her unconscious body up into his grip and, swiftly and hoping to avoid any confrontation with any witnesses who might come walking around corners, carried Kit back to the room.

Once inside, he hefted her body onto the bed. The bed itself was a mess but it was a mess that the girl herself had created. Cosimo berated himself for not waiting, for not forcing the girl to sober up. This could have gone a lot better. But Kit struck Cosimo as the kind of person who wouldn’t have listened anyway. Would he have been able to talk sense into her?

It was too late now, and there was no point thinking about the what ifs. They were stuck in this hotel room for better or for worse. At least the curtains were heavy. While he waited for the girl to wake up again, Cosimo busied himself first at the windows to make sure that no sunlight would get through should she not wake before the night was over. He then made sure to text Athena to tell her that something had come up – that he would tell her all about it later. Tempting as it was to call his girl, he didn’t particularly want her to come find him and slaughter Kit before the girl ever had a chance to wake up again.

Maybe it would be a mercy. Why were the ones that needed helping always female?

Cosimo groaned inwardly as he put the phone away. The room was… well, it wasn’t complete squalor, but it could do with a tidy. To keep himself occupied, he went around and cleaned up after Kit. He picked up the empty bottles and put things back where they belonged – even attempted to make the bed around her. He paused as he hovered over her, blood soaked into her torn shirt which he tentatively lifted. He’d almost forgotten about the glass in her side. Kneeling on the floor beside her, he did his best to try to pry the shards of broken glass from the skin.

Whether or not the body would reject them on its own, he didn’t know, but it was best not to find out whether the skin would just heal over them. Best to get them out now, while Kit was already passed out.

One minute she was about to pass out and the next her eyes were snapping open. Her muscles tensed, expecting to fall, but she was already down. In bed. Her bed. For the briefest moments she relaxed, thinking it had all been a dream, but the pain didn’t allow her to think that for long. It was her side, to start, as if someone was digging around inside of an open wound.

Her glance flicked down enough to see that man lifting her shirt, poking at her and causing the increase in pain. She was going to scream. Going to push him away. But then the pain wasn’t just in her side. The scream that tore out of her was barely human. The scream continued in her mind long after her vocal cords stopped producing the horrendous sound and the metallic taste of blood followed in its place.

Kit curled up into the fetal position in a vain attempt to evade the pain that had taken over her entire body. Acidic bile mixed with the metallic taste already in her mouth, forming a unique and utterly repulsive flavor that she wished she’d never again experience.

Her muscles started jumping and twitching, the pain intensifying until she swore she should be passing out from it; until she was begging to pass out from it. The words were barely audible, her vocal cords screaming at her for each syllable she uttered but she couldn’t stop the pleas.

Her eyes looked brighter than usual against the ashen color her skin had taken on, though her irides were barely noticeable around her dilated pupils. She locked her gaze on Cosimo, the pain in her eyes and face begging even more than the hushed pleas that she continued to whisper. Why wasn’t he making it stop? Tears had tracked down her face, not that she’d noticed past the pain, leaving itchy salt trails down her cheeks. ”Please…” The word came out over and over, quieter each time. It became her mantra, the only thing she left as the physical pain took control of everything else she had.

There was nothing that Cosimo could do.

He wondered, briefly, whether Elizabeth chose to bury everyone she turned not only for them to prove they had the strength to survive by digging themselves out, but so she could bury the pain that they went through, muffle the sound of their screams and their pleas. Here, in this dingy hotel room, he wondered how long it would be before there was a knock on the door and some good Samaritan coming to check and make sure everything was alright.

Or, more likely in this city, some careless ******** wanting to tell them to shut the **** up.

That was a scenario Cosimo would deal with if it happened. For now, he wasn’t about to stick a sock in Kit’s mouth to get her to be quiet. If screaming was what she needed to do to help herself with the pain, then scream she must. Cosimo only wished she would stop looking at him like that, her eyes begging him to make it stop. All he could do was shake his head, hum under his breath and brush the hair from Kit’s forehead. At least his hand was cold – it could act as a compress against the skin, something to chase away the fever raging through the girl’s body.

”It will be over soon,” he said, tone fuelled by reassurance.

At least, he hoped that he was not lying. Elizabeth buried those she turned to assure they were strong enough – did that mean that sometimes they were not? Did that mean that sometimes, they did not survive? Every time that Cosimo had tried, it had worked. It had worked on him. The thought was fleeting, gone before it could really take root. This would work. Kit would survive. Whether or not she thanked him for it, Cosimo had yet to find out. For now, he would have to deal with her wrath, with her pleas.

”You will be stronger. You will never be sick. You will be capable of more than you can imagine,” he said, painting a pretty picture of what Kit could expect. All he could do was wait, and try to make her as comfortable as possible until the worst had passed.

She didn’t believe him. Not for a single moment. Hopelessness and betrayal tainted the pained look her face had taken on. This was a test. She’d thought the pain couldn’t get any worse. That she was broken beyond repair. That everything was over and all that was left for her to do was self medicate with booze until the day it finally killed her. This pain? This pain was so much worse than any of that. It was clawing its way out of her, trying to kill her so much quicker than the booze ever would have.

The gesture Cosimo made was obviously meant to be soothing, but even that touch grated against her extra sensitive skin causing her to shy away from it. His skin felt like sandpaper. Her blood felt like sandpaper. Everything was sandpaper working on rubbing her down until there was nothing left.

Her short and blunt fingernails tried to dig into her stomach, scoring the flesh as she tried to get him out of of her system. If she could just dig her stomach out, get the blood he’d forced her to drink out… if she could just do all of that, all of her pain would stop, right? Her motions became more frantic, blood and skin cells starting to coat her fingernails and cake beneath them.

His blood was like the booze, only it was killing her quicker and causing her pain instead of numbing it. It was pure evil. She needed to get it out.

It had never been quite this bad. What did it mean? Those that Cosimo had turned before were independent types – they had turned without much hassle, but here Kit was looking like she wanted to rip her skin from her bones. Was it the alcohol? Did it clash with the blood somehow? Did it make it harder, as the blood tried to push all the toxins from her body? That had to be it.

Though Cosimo had not been drunk when he had been turned. But then, though the pain felt like it could have ripped him apart, he’d not wanted to tear his skin off. He leaned in and grabbed at Kit’s hands, holding them apart from her body.

”No, do not,” he said, words failing him. It didn’t matter, really. Whatever damage Kit did with her nails healed almost as soon as it was done. The scratches disappeared – and Cosimo could only hope that the blood was healing her now, inside, as fast as it was healing the superficial marks upon her skin. Even as he watched, the glass was tugged or pushed from her abdomen, the deeper wounds thinning into harsh red lines that, he hoped, would soon disappear themselves.

” Avrebbe dovuto portare una camicia di forza,” he muttered, tone sharp and yet vague. The idea was dismissed as soon as it was voiced. He doubted that this pink-haired girl would appreciate a strait jacket. He held Kit’s wrists as gently as he could, not wanting to manhandle her – but it was somewhat of a requirement.

Eventually, this would be over. And she could shout at him for completely different reasons. Not one for pessimism, however, Cosimo looked forward to a future where everything would be fine, and Kit would embrace the new life she had been given – regardless of the rough way she had been introduced to it.

Blur. It was all a blur of pain. And then nothing. The nothing felt good just because she felt absolutely nothing. The numb feeling slowly made way to a static like fuzzy feeling all through her body. It reminded her of scanning through radio stations and getting stuck on the static in between the one you were just listening to and the one you wanted to get to. In between. Nothingness.

As the static lifted she slowly began to notice things. Her throat still hurt, but it felt strange too. She couldn’t put her finger on what that feeling was and the funnier it felt the more she tried to focus in on it. So she stopped. It wasn’t the first morning after where she’d felt funny. Although, this was the weirdest hang over she’d ever had. She should have pins and needles stabbing through her brain.

Her eyes opened, hesitantly, but no searing pain came. They felt funny, too, but that funny feeling was starting to feel normal. There he was. She thought, maybe, that he looked concerned, so she thought back to the night before. What she could remember of the night before. There wasn’t much. She remembered meeting him. She remembered drinking a lot and she remembered him giving her something. Had it been a drug? She remembered liquid going down her throat, but it hadn’t tasted very good… or had it?

“I don’t know what you gave me, but that’s not a trip I plan on having again anytime soon.” The rasped words came out, amplifying that funny feeling in her throat. “Can you get me some water? I think my throat has turned into a desert.”

Eventually, the frantic scratching stopped. The girl relaxed. Slowly but surely, Cosimo relaxed, too. He sat back, shuffling along the ground until he found a hard surface upon which he could lean against. Whether minutes or hours passed, he didn’t know – even if he kept a constant watch on the windows to keep an eye out for any glimmer of sunrise.

The stirring caught his attention, the voice had him sitting up straighter. He winced when said voice asked for water, and realised rather than sitting uselessly to the side he should have left the motel to find a shop from which to buy blackmarket blood. The thought was dismissed. She might have woken up and wondered off.

”Ah, no,” he said, pushing himself to his feet.

”Your throat, it is a desert because you require blood. It is what will sate you now,” he said. If her path was the same as Athena’s, she would eventually be able to drink other things. If not… well. This would be her lot from now on. The explanation would come now, rather than before. It should have come before. He should have filled her in, but…

”This, I wish that I could have told you earlier. But you would not listen to reason. You were not sober. You would not have understood, you would have laughed,” he said. All flimsy reasons considering he’d just changed her life irrevocably.

”Now, you may laugh, but you will soon come to see that I am telling the truth. The water will only make you sick, and you have been sick enough already tonight, hm?” he said. He glanced at his watch. They had time. She would not go a whole day with her throat feeling the way that it did.

”You will feel weak but you will soon feel better. First, you must get out of bed,” he said, searching the surrounds for a coat. For something. They were going out. Again, and this time they would stay out for more than ten minutes.
