Meara was about halfway into her third chapter of the night before she looked up at the clock. It seemed Rowan was running late. She was about to turn back to her book when her phone started to ring in her lap. Her head tilted to the side as Rowans name flashed on the screen. Meara swiped right and brought the phone to her ear.

“Hi Rowan.” She said in greeting as the call picked up. The only response she got was the sound of a sickening crunch of bone hitting something really hard. Meara could feel the color draining out of her face as she continued to listen. Next there was a male’s voice. She couldn’t exactly make out what he was saying, but it was a warm baritone with a foreign accent. Faintly, she heard the sound of a car starting following the telltale open and closing of car doors.

Meara nervously swallowed as she pieced together the situation. It seemed Rowan was being taken somewhere. Meara assumed that this was an unwilling side trip because Rowan didn’t strike her as one to blow plans off.

Think, Meara, think. You gotta tell someone something’s happened to Rowan.

The redhead hurriedly started to gather her things, nearly tripping over the area rug as she moved to exit the café. Blue eyes glanced both ways before she rushed off towards the train station. Meara knew time was of the essence, but she didn’t want to hang up. A slender hand fished her earbuds out of her coat pocket, swiftly plugging them up to the phone and her ears so she could continue to listen to what was happening. She tapped a few times on her phone, working on getting to her phone book and starting a new text to Enzo.

[t] Sir, its Meara. Rowan dialed me somehow, and when I picked up she didn’t answer. All I heard was a really loud crack, a foreign guy’s voice, and what sounded like her being put in a car. The car started, and it sounds like its driving. I think something happened. Txt back - call is still running.

She was closing in on the Honeydale train station, which she would take to Wickbridge. Meara hoped to get to the shopping mall and slip inside QCC where she had access to a computer, paper, and a recorder.

There was a lot of rugged masculinity in the trunk of the Rolls. Az found himself glancing over the form, to follow the pattern of the tattoos. He knew from experience that the ones written as fae language could be blended into other tattoos, seemingly to give them a misleading design. Something told him that nothing about the Paladin required misdirection though. No subterfuge. He was exactly what he was without the need to hide it nor apologize. Az understood that well enough, and had the situation been different, the mystic wouldn't have had a problem with the Paladin. He held no bias nor grudge. But the moment someone targetted his blood, all bets were off. He was, by many a comparison, an exceptionally docile vampire. But he was also a dragon, and there were certain things which could not be avoided.

He had several questions for the man, even as he watched Enzo tranquilize the figure. As the Paladin was rolled into a bag to be carted off. As Mortll led the way. Az realized, when the thought nagged at the back of his mind, that he didn't know very much about the woman. They were socially friendly. He felt loyalty to her. Would defend her. But he didn't really know her all that well. Hopefully proximity would give them time to get closer. Intimacy through interaction. In fact, he'd seen more of the woman in only a few months than he'd seen her in years prior. And he liked that.

His hands were stuffed into pockets as he trailed along. He didn't suspect he'd be able to provide very much to the whole torture thing except for a line of questioning. Chances were though that Enzo would have much the same perspective as him. However, Az was fine with being a consenting observer.

"A little work indeed." Said with a ghost of a smile.

The outting of vampires to the world community was still something of a conundrum to Az. He spent a lot of time in his own head, and there were a lot of bad directions the whole thing could take. In the past, killing off Paladin would have been nothing. By their very nature, they were a secretive group, lest they come across as insane. Now with the cat out of the bag, how many of them were going to be funded by religions and religious states? How long until Paladins became the modern day terrorists?

Would anyone even care about vampires? They were dead, after all. Did that mean the cessation of human rights? They were cognizant and had sentience, which meant they should have some sort of rights. However without any explicitly stated, how long would it take for certain actors to try and use that as a loophole to murder vampires? And of course, there were the masses. One wrong image, of vampires torturing a human would be enough to discredit the entire population. Possibly to thousands. They had to be extremely careful about disposing of the body. Because chances were that every criminal death was going to be closely looked at for possible vampiric involvement. Which meant they had to work twice as hard to make homicide look completely human related. And they had to be more judicious with the people they killed.

Which was a pain in the *** for Az, but such was life. Or death, in this case.

It didn't take Mortll long to lead the men through the dark sewer passages that led to her Kitchen . They followed her easily to the large steel door. It looked quite old and rusty but it was quite new just camouflaged for prying eyes. She turned to the guys as she hauled the heavy door open " Watch your step and your cell phones will not work in here. There is a signal scrambler active I tend to like my privacy and do not like any unexpected interruptions or messes happening when I have special guests " She flipped a switch and the room flooded with light . In the center was a stainless steel autopsy table With trays of gleaming tools laid out. on the far wall sat a industrial band saw and Meat grinder. Over in the far corner of the room was a large cage made of steel bars it was not quite high enough for a man of short stature to stand without bending over. A one ton boom crane hung over a drain grate in the floor. Cuffs dangled from the cranes hook . Mortll turned back to the the guys "Welcome to my Parlor Its time for us to play "

Adjusting the dead weight on his shoulder, the unconscious Paladin seemed to get only heavier as he moved, Lorenzo stopped at the door leading into Mortll's "Kitchen". Allowing his mate and brother to enter first, he took in the surroundings with not a hint of surprise marring his bland expression. He could feel Mortll's tenseness in this sharing and he'd be damned if he did anything that made her sorry for her choice to let them in.

Shifting his gaze to his brother Azraeth, he did not miss the fact that his mate was allowing him further into her world as well, and that almost made all of this worthwhile. Almost. He loved both of them beyond measure, and both were like his own limbs. He could manage without either yes... but it would be unthinkably difficult. Slowly stepping in with his hostage, he steadied himself and brought his calculating mind back to what needed doing. His father had been murdered like a ******* criminal in a back alley... no better than a rat caught in the terriers trap. This could not go unpunished. This WOULD not go unpunished. With that determination he stepped completely in, just as his phone vibrated inside his suit breast pocket. He had it silenced but for family and emergency contacts... ****.

Nodding to Azraeth, he handed over the captive, nothing more than a sack of potatoes in the care he took. "I have to take this call. One moment." Without waiting to see what was said, he knew these two were more than capable of starting without him, he stepped back out for phone reception and closed the door behind him. Striding back out into the pollution laden night, he for once didn't notice the grit and feeling of oily air touch over him as he pulled the cell out to view it. Meara. The youngest Quartermaine... Alexandrea's childe... yes. He had given her his number when he had taken on her tenure at Dragonal, knowing that this one would not abuse it... so it had to be something regarding his own family otherwise the canny woman would have called her own sire. Alexandrea far more than capable of dealing with fledgling problems.

Thumbing open the screen, the purple LED flushed his skin far more human like than even normal... he was adept at using light to his advantage... he took in her message.

And then the rage that had been just under the surface began to boil over.

Rereading the text in case somehow he'd lost his reason between dropping of their captive and stepping back outside, he found that the message didn't change no matter how hard he glared at the screen...

Rowan was in danger.... taken...

Lowering his hand that held the cell, slowly... so very slowly, he gazed straight ahead for what seemed like hours, and then with a blur of motion and speed his free hand balled into a fist and began to slam the side of the building's brick and mortar. Blow after blow he delivered to the shuddering wall, dust and small bits of debris creating puffs of 'smoke' around him as he jackhammered almost through the outer casing. His fingers eventually too began to tear, his knuckles becoming nothing more than meat not fit for the lowest scavenger, but still he continued, teeth gritted and focus completely lost in the moment.

Finally, as blood began to splatter his suit, his face, his shoes... hand broken beyond recognition, his thrusts started to slow until one last blow landed and his head lowered to rest on the demolished area of wall. "****."

This was no coincidence. His father murdered, now this... they were targeted. He knew that with all surety. There was no lying to themselves and hoping.

If it was war they wanted...

Lorenzo was a ******* GOD of war. His father had been the worlds ******* LEADER in illegal arms, mercs and starting wars from nothing to further political agendas. And he had taught his son well. The allurist raised his unmolested hand, still holding his cell, his injured fist still bunched and bleeding even as it began to knit itself, at his side. He keyed in his heirs code and held the cell to his ear until it picked up.

"Poppy. Someone has taken Rowan. Meara Quartermaine has Rowans phone still going for now and is searching for her. Find her, but do not act until you have contacted me. I will text you Meara's number."

Thumbing it closed once more, he popped into his text screen and sent the information to his firstborn. Penelope was capable of the task, he had no doubts. Sly as a cat and just as street smart, she would do what needed doing. This done, he then replied to Meara's text.

"Keep the line going as long as you can. I have sent Penelope to aid you. Absinthe and Xerxes will also aid, I will send you their information. You have done well childe. I will not forget."

One more swath of thumb movement and he shot out a dual text to both Xerxes his only male childe, and Absinthe, his youngest daughter, instructing them to heed Penelope's orders and to contact Meara Quartermaine.

Once finished with the duties of communication, the helplessness set in. It almost swarmed him and bowed him, but he remained upright and shoulders straight somehow. His childe was taken... more than likely by the same Paladins that hunted them from England, and he was sending the rest of his brood straight into battle without having been given a chance of training and testing of mettle... Oh he knew that Poppy was a capable commander. He knew that Xerxes was a cold blooded sociopath. He knew that Absinthe was the ******* princess of Asian mafia... it was not the concept of them he worried over...

He...

...loved them.

The Dragon had been poked... let the destruction begin.

swish swish swish

The steady rhythm of the windshield wipers were the only sounds to break the heavy silence in the car. It was a patchy rain, the moon peeking out between the clouds as if they were curtains parting for a beautiful actress ready to take her scene. Clicking the wipers switch, he slowed them as the rain began to diminish, letting moisture gather on the glass before being swept aside. The woman in his back seat made no noise, so he opted out of turning on music. Instead he focused on her, listening for any tell tale sign she was rousing. He knew that he did not have much time, the vampiric metabolism being what it was, the Paladin had to make haste without drawing attention to himself.

Staying just within speed limits, he maneuvered the vehicle expertly but without much interference. The streets of the city almost as dead as the sidewalks and cold neon night places. Now that the masquerade was breached the population was beginning to show again... as if the answer to their problems had been given and even though it was monstrous, the mystery was gone. It was for this reason that the Order was now showing itself. Making its move. They had to turn humankind from the demons. They must succeed before the evil managed to coat the world and seduce it from the righteousness of God. Ignacio knew this was His final test for the righteous. That He was about to unleash apocalypse upon the sin filled world... and it was the Spaniards calling to gather as many as he could into the fold. He was fully prepared to sacrifice his own life if need be.. as were all the Red Templar...

They had been chosen, trained, from childhood to be the ultimate warriors of God. Those that did not meet the challenge were taken back into His arms as reward for their efforts, even as death was the end game for failure. The Vatican.. the holy of holies... Italian to its core so it was no surprise really that such Spartan tactics were still utilized... why deviate from a formula that worked? It was little known that even the Swiss Guard, the neutral army that guarded His Holiness bore the tattoos of power and trained as ancient Greeks did when there was little more to war than tooth and claw. Ignacio himself had been called to duty long ago. It was from there that he earned his ranks and moved further into the shadows to guide this branch of Templar. He had knelt and worshipped beside Popes and Cardinals. He had confessed to Archbishops. He had bowed before the lowliest of priests as God's men.

He had parted his own backs flesh with the whips of ancient monasteries and knew it for the privilege it was.

The Spaniard was under no misconception that he was but a tool of God. He had no vanities about himself, long since having shed such things under the guidance of his teachers and their arsenal of pain... pain that released him from such mortal weaknesses. Pain that he still underwent when the penance warranted, or he felt the weight of sin burdening his thoughts. He was not above such things no matter his rank and he was not unaware that his men loved him for that. He had heard said that he was amongst the most popular of leaders his order had ever placed upon the Red Dias.

It was pain he would use to help those taken by the dark kiss that still could be saved. Those that still bore the glimmer of innocence, not yet tainted by murder and destruction and filth. He had seen, had killed those monstrosities that came from vampire unions... fadebeasts... if the birthing of those spawn could not convince vampire that they were an abomination then they were well and truly lost. Nothing still touched by God could have this knowledge and continue to walk the earth.

But they did. And would... until the public witnessed such for themselves...

And they would. Ignacio would see to it.

The Templar had faith enough in humankind to know what their collective disgust would respond with when the full evil of leaches was unleashed before their eyes... did they not rise up before? They would again... and this time...

it would be permanent.

Keen hearing picked up the sound of rocks crunching beneath his tires and he knew they were at the southmost building of the monastery, abandoned for all intents and purposes via the Pope's orders. Left to decay and fall from remembrance so that it once again became the perfect citadel against evil. From the outside the grey building looked like a ruin of some minor keep, the walls running around it were toppling and the landscape had reclaimed much of the structures. The moonlight shone against the slick wet walls making it appear as black glass in some areas, beautiful still, much as an aging seductress held on to a bit of her former handsomeness.

Hidden inside however was a bevy of the modern. Technology used for everything from communication to tracking, housing prisoners to killing them... it was all there, given for him to use in the interests of the Church. He would not fail them.

Parking the vehicle around the side, hidden from sight, he stepped out and looked around himself. It was not long until four men emerged from seemingly no where, dressed much as he was in dark greys and black, their crosses mounted on kevlar vests and tattoos seeming to writhe and move against well muscled flesh. Ignacio nodded to them and motioned to the backseat, stepping aside as they unloaded the vampress.

"Care with this one... she has innocence still..." flowed his Spanish accent, his eyes grazing over her still form before walking toward the main building. He would let his men situate her in her cell before he began. She would wake soon... her only company the rats that nested there in the straw strewn floors. Shackled and alone, he would begin his duty to break her. Fear was a powerful tool... and she would soon learn she was not truly alone as the sounds of their other prisoners screams made their way through the maze of corridors in the dungeons... straight to her ears and imagination...

Yes, he would save her. She had touched him somehow and he would do no less than his all for her. It had to be that she was special to God or surely Ignacio would feel nothing for her, just as with every other demon he fled from the earth. Yes... she was a trial for him to bear, a task that he must succeed in... and no weakness of his flesh would keep him from doing what was asked. Nothing would keep him from avenging his brother Barros. Not even this small angel trapped in demon wrappings.

Ignacio turned another corner and stepped into his own cell. Slowly undressing, carefully placing his gear neatly away, he then knelt before the cross upon his wall and lowered his head in supplication, beginning his prayers to purge him of sin, the whip he would use lay by his side, ready to add to the myriad criss crossings of silver scar flesh that gave testament to his devotion.

He. Would. Not. Fail.

Mortll looked as Enzo left ... and then to Azraeth and his burden "Bring him over here " she said as she walked over and grabbed the dangling control to the boom crane and pressed the green button. The sharp whirring of the cranes motor filled the room as the cable lowered the blood encrusted cuffs down. It didn't take her long to have the cuffs on the Paladins wrists and the crane freed the male dragon of his load.

The paladins feet hung a couple of feet from the floor. Mortll picked up a knife and started to work cutting the mans clothing from his body. She pulled it from him revealing scared tattooed flesh on a well built body. She shook her head what a waste ... "Well we are going to need him awake first off" she reached up and slapped the mans face. She didn't even get a groan . The cuffs cut into his wrists as he spun slightly. She walked over to the wall and unreeled The high pressure fire hose and turned the spigot . The scream as the brute force of water hit the dangling man was like music to Mortlls ears he spun wildly the water tearing at his flesh. She looked at Az " I think we got his attention What is taking Enzo so long ... ?"

Mea was already on the train when the text notification had popped up on her phone. She was relieved to see that Enzo was sending her assistance. As a fairly new resident of harper’s Rock and being a greenhorn vampire, one could say she could barely tell her head from her *** yet. Her tracking of the phone had failed, so perhaps Penelope might have an idea of where they were taking Rowan.

Her ears were continuing to analyze the sounds she could hear over the line, as the train chimed its arrival into the station. She heard another cardoor slam over the line, followed by the crunch of gavel. Even before it was stopped Mea was waiting at one of the doors and pressed out onto the platform at Wickbridge as soon as they opened. Once she was free of the throng, she took off at a run down the sidewalk to cover the few blocks between the Mall and the station. Best she could tell Rowan had arrived at her destination, where ever that was. So she quickly replied to Enzo as she walked through the doors of the 8th Dimension Mall.

[t] Okay. Send them to Quartermaine Custom at the 8D Mall. I’m locking the door behind me, so they need to knock. I’m not sure who ever it has Rowan realized the phone is running yet. It does sound like they have stopped driving – walking on a gravel or stone path.

A blue painted thumbnail hit send before starting to dig her keys out of her purse, and hurriedly opened the door. It was closed and locked as quickly as she had come in, and then went over to her desk behind the register. Mea placed the phone in the charging cradle, and set it to speaker phone mode so she could continue listening as she moved about the room making sure it looked like they were closed for the day. Mea retrieved the notepad and tablet from her purse, and then started to set up her iPad as a recording device. And so she plopped down in her chair, settling to listen and taking notes She hoped by the time Penelope got there, who ever that was, she would have a complete record of all of her observations.

The only sound was of the spanner, of metal clinking against metal. The spotify playlist had finished an hour ago and Penelope kept meaning to get up and play another one, but she continued to forget. She was far too wrapped up in the bike, the piece of art that she was currently working on. It was going to be meaner, faster, and growlier than a top-notch Harley. She was pretty ******* excited about it.

When the phone chimed to alert her of an incoming phonecall she stared at it from across the room. It was plugged in so it wouldn’t go flat – Penelope could be flighty and irresponsible in some ways, but in others she was precise and reliable. Part of a person’s reliability meant that they should have their phone on at all times, that they should check their messages promptly and reply to them even quicker – and answer the phone when it rang the first time, rather than let it go to message bank. The temptation was there to leave it. It was probably just Ryan – a man Poppy roped into a booty call every now and again, but it was time to cut him off. Had to. He was starting to get clingy. Instead, she rolled out from beneath the bike and sauntered over to the phone, rubbing the oil and grease from her hands with a dirty rag. She tossed it aside and swiped the phone’s screen, answering the call – her sire – with a bright ‘Ola!’.

The reply she got was not at all bright, however – there was no greeting, and nor should there be. Rowan had been taken. There was no leeway for conversation, but it was not required. Enzo had given Penelope her lead, and that was all she needed. She could get answers from this Meara. Before she called the number that Enzo sent through, Penelope stripped from her overalls and tugged on her leather jacket. She wasn’t the only one working late – she called out goodbye to her fellow employees and hot-footed out to her own bike, swinging a leg over the seat and settling in before she called Meara.

A very short conversation later and an over-the-limit drive through the city later, and Penelope was standing at the door of Quartermaine Custom, her knock alerting anyone inside to her arrival. There was still grease smeared across her cheek, her hair knocked up in a messy bun. But she didn’t have to be a supermodel to track down her sister. She just had to be present.

The darkness used to be her friend, a place that she could run to and use to hide from the evil in the world that sought her harm. Even when she had been turned as a vampire she was comfortable in them, being one of them, despite not being blessed with the powers to control said shadows and darkness. Which was possibly why she felt slightly betrayed by her old friend the dark when she started coming back to consciousness.

Her sense of smell came back first, and her impression was of a place moist with mold and scattered rodent feces. Not at all pleasant, really. And didn't give any clues of where she was. Her head felt heavy and her tongue was thick in her mouth, reminding her that she had been drugged. Her sense of hearing came back next, with an almost deafening scream nearby. Rowan quickly dialled down her senses but not quick enough to escape the ringing in her ears. Someone nearby was in pain, a lot of pain. Considering she had been abducted, it wasn't far out to assume that the unknown person was undergoing torture. She felt cold and weak, opening her eyes to find herself in a cell of some sort, hands still restrained painfully behind her back. Struggling made the bite of the restraints worse, cutting into her flesh and causing it to bleed, though she couldn't see it. She felt afraid but knew she had to appear strong if she was going to get out of this situation alive or even with all her limbs intact.

The grate of metal on metal hand her turning her head and attempting to focus her eyesight. "Who's there?!" She called out, pushing bravado into her voice. If they couldn't see her fear, they couldn't take advantage of it.

It didn't surprise Azraeth that Mortll had a place to 'take care of business', such was par for the course when it came to any vampire who intended to survive for very long. By their very nature, they had to feed on humans (or other living beings) in order to survive. Harper Rock was not a safe or kind place to live, and often their kind had to defend against the next big evil, be it rogue vampires, or blood thieves, or hunters. Even Az, who rarely felt the need to interrogate anyone, had his own apartment soundproofed, and the floors and walls had been treated with a substance which made the cleaning of blood very easy. Even with luminol and a blacklight, finding evidence of foul play in his home was difficult. So the idea of Mortll having created a place to take people in order to question them didn't seem out of place to the vampire. No matter one's ideology, sometimes one had to make the tough choices. Thus was life.

"Swanky." He mentioned in passing, as he helped to cart the human inside. The metallic instruments spoke of pain, and of experience. The industrial props, even if they weren't used (though Az suspected they were), created an intimidating façade. The signal scrambler was not only efficient, but it killed any hope a captive might have had of sneaking a coded message off to someone waiting in the wings. He respected the choices, because all of them had been clearly thought out, which revealed the more methodical side of Mortll's personality. A side that Azraeth found himself appreciating more and more with the passing of time, because he prized efficiency in his business dealings. He glanced towards the meat grinder. "Had a Mrs. Lovett moment?" He asked. Which was right around the time Enzo had to go and take a call. Az was more than happy to pick up the slack, since the human didn't weigh all that much to begin with.

Slinging the body closer, he was more than happy to do as directed. In fact, he was just happy that he got to be part of the whole thing. Work with his bloodline towards a common goal. Even if it was torture. Even if the event that had sparked the whole thing had been something terrible. He ended up hauling the paladin over to the crane so Mortll could secure the wrists. Az stepped back then, his arms dropping to his sides as his gaze settled on the man. His idea to wake the man up would have been to let his own palms burn brightly, and then touch them to the human's flesh. However, it seemed Mortll had a more practical idea in mind. Seconds later, the room was filled with the sound of a scream. The vampire thought he could hear a thunking sound in tandem with Mortll's question and he glanced back towards the door. "I'll go check." He offered. Really, both of them weren't necessary to begin asking questions. And he doubted the paladin was going to crack in the news few minutes anyway.
