"Ah." I stood up and brushed off the dirt from my pants. "So aum . . . is there like, a palace or like, an underground kingdom for vampires or something? Or are we within the society?" I asked and leaned against the wall.

"We...dwell....within society...but....we...are...hidden..." Hanei explained in his usual, slow, raspy voice. "There...are a....number...of...places....shops...companies...homes...mansions...clubs...that are...owned...and...operated...by...vampires...around the...city..."

"What?" I said. "So basically, humans go there and the vampires are basically luring them to eat them? How come no one has realized this?" I threw my hands up and slid back down to sit against the wall.

Hanei knew this was difficult to understand, or to even agree with. Had he been someone else when he'd been Turned, he would have felt the same way. But it was simply how vampires survived, how they have survived for untold generations.
