How about a Quest instead?

You have to perform exciting, interesting tasks before a NPC can hand it over to you.

At least make it more interesting than the stuff we're doing at the moment.

I'd like a quest that contains all of the above.

A quest that gives you options. You can either steal xyz rare item specific to the quest, or craft her the item, or beat an NPC for the item, or convince at Fae to bring it to you in that ritual or find her information about the item she wants in a hack, ECT.

Then when you go to turn in the item, she tells you she really needed that item, so she will sell you the fae shard for 500k/750k just this once (one time per character period). Every other time you go to her a fae shard would be 1Mill.

couldnt even begin to count the blood thieves i have killed amongst my players....no blood buff relic....

I'm open to the discussion regarding fae shard drops, though. I'm torn between making exclusively sold in magic shops (or by NPCs at auction), or making them very, very, very rarely drop during certain circumstances. But if they did drop, then it poses many balance problems as far as which ones, in which circumstances, and how certain skillset characters would be able to get the ones they need.
I"m thinking it's a really bad idea to make a Mastery Faeshard an NPC drop of any kind. It' just means your killer NPC fighters will get them all and then corner the market.

I like Michelle's idea, with options that you can use for your character depending on their specialty, that they can get one for themselves.

I'd still make the cost 1,000,000 along with the quest. >.> Cause it's masteries.

That would be pigeonholing paths way too much. I play a new mystic character, but I'm going for combat and crafting centric, which is totally the reverse of what most people assume they are.

I was thinking of making it so that there's a quest AND a shard you need to buy.

Only problem that raises is what quest? I mean, if we made it so you have to do a stealth related quest for shadows, not all shadows are going to be statted for sneaking.

Or I suppose they could be generic quests, like they have in DA (RBC).

That's a huge amount of programming. You're talking 6 quests for every single mastery.
