He lurked. That was what he did.

It wasn't that he lurked well, exactly. He was too tall and gangly and probably far too memorable to stay hidden for long. Especially when he was lurking where he knew people and they knew him. How awkward. Of course, his whole life was a string of awkward in one way or another.

He raised his hand and cleared his throat. As if he needed to raise his hand very high to be seen, but it wasn't about that so much as garnering attention.

"Fifty-six thousand, please."

Pi hadn’t heard that voice in, years.

It conjured memories of when she was first turned and of Velox Nocte when he was her mentor and when he left she had picked up the place he’d vacated and had led the Killers in that group. The smile, as she turned was luminous in the way a smile could be when an old friend walked into the room after a long separation. Caine wasn’t the friendly sort, he was often quiet and introverted and had minimal to say at the best of times but it had been years since she’d seen him, let alone talked to him and then here he was.

Lifting her hand in a small wave she mouthed a silent ‘wow’ to indicate her surprise at him being here and then stared at the space between, knowing she couldn’t just get off he stage and go say hello until the auction was done, but determined when this was over, to do exactly that.

Pi moves to the mic and calls the auction, announcing in a loud voice. "Last bids, In three... Twooo... ONE. SOLD!"

Caine rubbed the back of his neck and smiled, the same awkward stretched smile that showed too much teeth and crinkled the skin near his eyes. But it was genuine and bright, despite that it made him look a little like a caricature. He put his hand down after his bid was put in and loitered with his hands in his pockets, waiting to see if he'd be outbid.

When he wasn't, he smiled again, ducking his head a little. His fingers plucked out his wallet and he pulled out a crumpled check that he scrawled on with a pen in his loopy, cramped handwriting.

"Fifty-six thousand to the mad..." Even now, he wanted to speak French to impress her despite his intense inability to pronounce the foreign words. "Madame."
