Peter listened to Keara, gaze drifting from her face to the wall, before finally returning to the innards of the room that he could not enter. The green hues had glazed, somewhat, as he gathered the intent that Keara spoke of. The first part had made sense, yes, but the latter half of her explanation was what bothered Peter. He had to think that he was welcome, before he could enter? But once inside, not dwell on it? To not think about how he wasn’t welcome, or how he’d like to be, but to just forget about it altogether? Rather than ask, he forged on ahead.

His eyes flit between all the different objects in the room. He thought about who they belonged to. Keara and Enver, the two people who had killed him. One of whom had brought him back to life, though the intent was there for the both of them. They had not killed him, no. They now welcomed him, made him feel secure, helped him where he needed help. He knew that for help, all he needed to do was ask. His hands slipped into his pockets. Gizmo had slipped past him and was sitting, nuzzling at his own paw just inside the door. He thought of his own house, and of all the dogs inside. How warm and welcoming it was. His eye twitched.

Why wouldn’t they welcome him into their room? If he were hurting, or if Gizmo were hurting, maybe, they’d let him in. They’d invite him. And anyway, Keara was here encouraging him to break over the threshold. That was welcome enough, wasn’t it? It wasn’t hard for the intent to be there. It wasn’t hard to feel welcome, in this situation. When he tried again, to step forward, he was met with a small amount of resistance. But it didn’t last very long. And then he was slipping through it, feeling a light buzz pass over his skin. And once inside, he felt that buzz in his head, weak, almost non-existent, but it was there. He rolled his shoulders. Gizmo had jumped up, and danced around Peter’s feet. Peter crouched down to pet the creature.

He did his best not to focus on where he was and where he wasn’t supposed to be. Instead, focused on the animal, as if the animal were the sole reason he was there. He mumbled incoherently at the dog, before turning a preoccupied smile up to Keara, who still stood on the other side of the door.

Keara watched with quite a degree of interest as Peter began to consider the task ahead of him. It wasn't difficult to know that this was what he was doing as he was the bookish sort and quietly pensive. She had no idea if what she'd said to him would make any kind of sense. Powers differed from person to person and even when people possessed the same ones, it wasn't always clear if they activated in the same way or for the same reasons. Enver's powers seemed particularly unpredictable at times and he seemed to have less control over certain ones. She could understand that though, as she'd had particular trouble with some of the telepath abilities.

As he stepped across the threshold, she smiled exposing her fangs, genuinely pleased that he not only had that particular ability but that he's mastered it too. Peter was now standing inside of their cell. She wasn't sure if he'd dwell on what he'd done or not and she wasn't sure it even mattered; for her, having pushed her way through the barrier that tried to keep her out, she usually quickly pushed the fact that she had more or less broken in to the back of her mind.

"Most useful that skill is," she stepped in behind him and scooped Gizmo up before handing him over. "For me, know I do that I my family can reach should need me they do. Once. Enver invited me did to his home but forgot he did for me there welcome to make. Pushed then against the barrier I did. Useful to me this power shall be if family injured are and behind closed doors are. Enter then I can for them to help, even if asleep they are. Of course there less noble reasons are for a place uninvited to enter too."

”Less noble reasons…” Peter said, the words a rumbling hum as they crawl form his throat. Just as he had been thinking, of course there would be those on the same path as he and Keara who would use this specific ability for less noble reasons. He gingerly took the small dog out of Keara’s hands as it was handed to him. There was no reluctance, and he bundled the creature easily against his chest. The dog didn’t seem too phased. Peter’s fingers curled into the soft fur, absently patting the dog.

”I won’t be using it for the less noble reasons,” Peter said. Even with all his high notions of superpowers and super heroes, even if his name vaguely resembled the human alias of a said superhero, he was quite happy to remain cooped up in his own small world. Let the thieves thieve. He wouldn’t be able to stop them, and wouldn’t try even if he could. There might be things in this world that he disagreed with but it was easier to remain apart until those things landed on one’s own doorstep. Only then did he step forward, only then would he do what was in his power to keep he and his from any kind of harm. He cleared his throat and, speaking of being unwelcome places, he took a single step backwards, and backed out of the room. Just in case.

His gaze shifted from Keara, and down to the dog in his arms. Gizmo was twisting around trying to lick Peter’s fingers. He allowed it, holding out his fingers to give Gizmo better access.

”I’m sure I would use it only for the same reasons you have mentioned,” he mumbled, slowly turning his attention back to Keara, before glancing down the hall. He thought that he should maybe be a little more excited, a little more enthusiastic about this thing that he had learned. His mind was abuzz, clouded, fuzzy. He blinked. He smiled, just a little.

”What next?”

Keara nodded. While there were many in the city that would not be put off by the nobleness or lack thereof of their actions, she was glad to hear that Peter would not be counted amongst their number; not that he'd ever given her reason to suspect otherwise. The skill, while incredibly useful, would likely seldom be used by him as it was by her but in the moments in which it would be used, it would prove itself invaluable.

"Glad I am for this to hear. But need you did not for the words to say, for me that to know."

She cast a smile in his direction and watched as Gizmo investigated Peter's scent in a more effective manner. The tiny creature was an endless source of amusement and wonder to her and while his thundering heartbeat might have been a temptation for some of their kind, Keara had no such desire to feed upon him; partially as she assumed there was too little sustenance coursing through his veins for her liking and partially as she knew it would likely end his already short life. Animal blood wasn't something she relished and while feeding from the vein was always preferable it was the blood of mortals that called to her and not the blood of helpless entities such as Gizmo. If she were honest there was another blood that drew her in but she was loathed to walk upon that path and was usually quite careful about how much of his blood she imbibed when they were being intimate with one another.

"Hmm... So few gifts shown can be. And here the location is not for the effectiveness of most to witness. Try I think we shall for the next one in the park to test."

She was going to see if the lake had started to thaw, so that she could test his ability to walk on water. Usually she paid no attention to the climate about her and Keara rarely, if ever, (in this day and age) changed her outfits to accommodate it and so had not noticed if the surface of the lake was yet free of the ice that had covered it these many months. It didn't really matter though perhaps, as it was well within her power to either break it apart or warm in area of it through. So the test could be done even if nature wished it otherwise.

"Gizmo with us you may bring," she said as she exited the room and closed the door behind them.

Again, Peter flipped between excitement and reluctance; he wanted to leap forward in bounds, wanted to figure out every single thing that he could and could not do so that he could, perhaps, feel a little more comfortable in his skin. At the moment, he felt like a man who’d just bought new clothes. A man who never bought new clothes, who’d lived in old clothes, in second-hand garments all his life, and now he was wearing a tailored suit, measured to only his specifications, and stitched in such a way that the garment would stretch and mould as he grew and changed.

A suit of invincibility, but at the same time, invisible. Like anyone would be able to see straight through.

But it was okay. It would be okay, Peter knew. It just took some adjusting, and it wasn’t going to happen overnight. It wasn’t going to happen in a week, or two weeks. All it took were a few nights like this – of teaching and of exploration. And it would be okay.

The taller man readjusted his hold on Gizmo; the dog struggled only a little as it saw Keara walking away, but relaxed, tongue lolling from his mouth, as Peter fell into step behind Keara. It was a small comfort to Peter, for some reason or other, to have the dog bundled in his arms. He had no idea what Keara had in store for him, but he trusted his sire more than he trusted anyone else. Yes, he knew that she had her flaws and that she was not perfect, but perhaps that was why he trusted her like he did. No one should ever trust anyone who claimed to have no flaws.

They took the elevator down to the ground floor, and still Peter remained behind Keara. He didn’t say much; he was lost in his own thoughts.

”How did you… I suppose, it was your own sire who taught you what you were capable of? Did you have someone to teach you, like you are teaching me now? Or did you figure it all out on your own?” Peter asked, his curiosity unbridled, his voice a deep rumble as each clearly enunciated word cleared his chest.

It didn't take long before they were heading out the front door and Keara began to move around the edge of the building as they needed to head into the park. The night air was cool and there was very little by way of movement about them as they walked into the badly lit public space. Of course there were well lit path areas, but these would not do for them, as the point of the evening was to test his powers, not alert the frail creature to the existence of supernatural beings.

"Sorry. Silent I was, as thinking I was," she eventually said once they were plodding across the park. "Long ago it was when I my powers first did learn. Yes. Ven, my sire, me much did teach. Helped it did that we of the same path were. Times different then were however. Much longer did it me take for my powers to acquire. So many powers then I did not have. Crossed I did but one bridge in my two centuries. Powers this side learned I have myself for to control. Helped it did for knowledge of powers to have, as quite versed I was in powers that available in my time were. Though some powers of that age lost have been it would seem. Recall one now I cannot, but know I do that gifts then there were, that seen here I have not."

Vampires had indeed changed since the first time she walked the earth and while many powers were still in existence as they once were, some were not and some were entirely new. She couldn't say how or why these changes had come about but it was perhaps the natural progression of their kind; the human race had evolved in the two centuries they had been gone, so it was only right that these changes would affect them too.

If questions you ever have. Ask them of me you always may. Know this you do. Yes? Answers I cannot always promise to have, but try I always shall for answers to give if have them I do.

They were still heading in the direction of the lake and had Peter been paying attention up until this point, he may have noticed that her silence had been more than just her thinking things through, as while this was true, talking of Ven was something that still (at times) caused her pain. Talking of him and her human family still hurt but she persevered where she could and was getting better at it, as questions such as his would have sent her catatonic just one year previous. Of course Keara had no problems talking of Ven with Enver, they had discussed him so much and so often that speaking of him to her husband, was like thinking of him within her own mind. Speaking of him to others was still rare and thus she’d had to think of her words before she could voice them.

History would always be something that would fascinate Peter; it should have occurred to him that Keara’s silence was due to something else, but he wasn’t listening so much to the parts about her sire, and her teacher, but he was absorbing more about Keara’s beliefs and opinions – her knowledge – of how vampires had changed. Peter had so many questions. Why should they be able to gain power faster now, as compared to then? Did it have to do with the evolution of the human race? Did they, as vampires, rely on human development in order to develop themselves? Without humanity, would vampires languish and die, or would they figure out a way to go on?

Was it human blood that gave vampires their specific powers? The ones who can connect to technology, for example; that had to be a new development. That wouldn’t have been something that would have existed in Keara’s age.

Or is it just the fact that there are more humans, now? More vampires, and thus more power? The Earth is saturated with humanity, with technology and pollution. Did vampires evolve to adapt to the new climate, just as humans and animals did?

As all the questions filtered down into Peter’s brain, he too fell silent. The air was crisp and the park was clear around them. Wide open space that smelled of nature; the scent of the dew in the grass, the trees, the wind drifting in from the river. The river. That very large body of water that Peter liked to avoid, when and where possible. The proximity of it distracted him; the notion that they were only getting closer. He cleared his throat and clenched his fists in his pockets.

”I know. I’ll… ask them if I need to. I…” he was going to start. He was going to ask what Keara thought – what were the reasons for their speed, now, for the sheer number of powers now available to them? Except that there, in the distance, he could see the glimmer of icy-cold water, flotsams of ice drifting slowly upon the current. He cleared his throat again and slowed his steps.

”Are we going toward the river?” he asked.

Keara nodded as they were indeed heading for the body of water that lay in the heart of the park. The proximity to the park was half the reason Keara had chosen the building she had for their home but she didn't tell him that. Despite the fact that nature, true nature seemed to have a deep hatred of her and her kind, she had not lost her affection for it in return. Keara enjoyed wide open grassy spaces, woods, water, everything really and a part of her ached to be able to spend more time within the more untamed areas of wilderness that surrounded their city.

"To the water we go yes. Show you I shall a talent that most only in the bible have read. If read you have that text. Many more religions seem there to be these days. Though sure I am that that the case is not. Little contact had I with many other religious sects that in my former life there were. Even when travelled I did, few my interest captured did."

Keara wasn't one to speak on religion all that often. She blamed many a misfortune on such beliefs and thought it better to just believe what you and believe and never speak of it unless asked to do so. In the past it had involved lying, a great deal of the time, as humans were not permitted to know of Nox and Helios. Though for many years she could not even admit to being pagan, something humans would have understood, instead she would say that she was Catholic or Protestant or whatever the religion was that seemed to be in favour in that area or country.

"See soon you shall what do we can. This one easily shown is. And enjoyable is for to do, so long as no onlookers there are," she continued, bringing the conversation back on topic.

Of course Peter had read the bible. Not because he was overtly religious, but because it was a significant historical text. One of the most significant historical texts, in fact, and yet most people looked at it merely as a book, and many avoided it completely, preferring to look upon it with derision. No, Peter didn’t believe what was written inside of the bible but he was fascinated by how persuasive it had been throughout history; fascinated by the way that it had been chopped and changed, how some Kings or Popes had decided that whole books should be removed. And why. The context of the times was always important.

And anyway, regardless of whether or not he had read the bible, any fool would know exactly what part of it that Keara was referring to. Was she going to show him how to part the seas? No, maybe not – that might be a little too conspicuous. Was she going to show him how to turn the large body of water into wine? No, that too seemed a bit ridiculous. Walk on water? Peter remembered reading something about it in his research….

But it didn’t matter what she wanted to show him. It wasn’t the what that terrified him. Rather, it was the where. He’d always had a fear of large bodies of water, though the fear seemed to have grown, and to have become more crippling recently. Maybe an indication as to what was to come, a further decline of his mental health. Whatever the case, Keara affirmation of where they were heading had Peter stopping dead in his tracks. He shook his head.

”No,” he said, rather vehemently. ”I don’t want to go near the water. Can we skip this one? I don’t… I can’t… I really don’t want to go near the water,” he said, glancing over his shoulder as if yearning for the safety of the city streets, before turning his pained expression back to his sire.

Keara's face showed little to no comprehension as to his fear as he spoke. It was odd to her that he would want to shy away from such a simple task as this. The most negative outcome of this test would be that he got his feet wet and that was a far less frightening outcome than the real and physical pain the last test could have inflicted upon him if he failed. His words contained no logical reasoning for the request and served only to show that he'd rather skip what she had planned.

"Understand I do not." Her words were soft and calm. "This an easy task is. Most shadows this ability do enjoy. Of use it can be, here, as on the ocean."

On the ocean perhaps it was of less use, certainly in this day and age but in the age in which she was first sired, it was rather useful if one didn't want to have to swim or walk the bottom of the seabed when the ship you were on was torn apart by the waves. It was of more use perhaps in aiding the frail ones that were accompanying you, as most were certain to perish in the cold waters after just a few hours, something most thralls never had to endure when travelling in the company of Shadow vampires. Keara herself had, had to carry such a creature to dry land before; a memory she had all but forgotten until now.

"Averse you are to this task and yet no reason given you have as to why. If wish you do for another challenge to undertake, explain you should why this one waived should be."

The fact that he didn't want to do the task was all well and good; she'd likely not toss him into the water or teleport him onto it, as would more likely be the case if she chose to test him by force, and yet she wasn't so willing to let him off the hook without any reason as to why he didn't want to go near the water.
