They had both confirmed that their news was serious, and if Leonie had not said it was a good serious Alaric might have begun questioning her before the others returned. As it was, he sat after Leonie had; not too far away there was a flowing fountain, the bubbling cadence of the water a calming sound, one disinhibited by the constant buzz of modernity. Lights from the house filtered through the trees and somewhere, a fire burned. The lighting was low, but not so low that they would not be able to see each other. It was rather pleasant, even if not how Alaric had thought his night might start.
”You will not tell me before Louvel returns,” he said. It was not a question, only a statement. Louvel had said they’d both wanted to tell him something, had even waited for Leonie. It was unlikely that Alaric would get any answers yet.
”I am happy to see you are both home safe. Germany, it was good?” he asked. Something must have happened while they were there – Alaric tried not to guess. He couldn’t have, even if he tried. ”The family, they are good?” he asked. The questions were veering toward the inevitable. Was it something to do with someone else? He would have liked to have met the family in Germany – the ones who had not already come to the Estate at Christmas. But that was a journey he would have to leave for another time – once he had properly gained control of his own senses again.

“I just would like you to be there when I do this.” Louvel was starting to notice the condition of her room and shook his head. It was Birdee. As chaotic as she could be it was still perfectly sensible when it came to her. The small bulk of the velvet box restricted the fabric of his pocket that held it. Now if he could resist the urge to tell her before he got her to where Alaric and Leonie were waiting. “No vital organs needed... yet. It is right up there with watching me walking a tight rope for the first time. Up high and no safety net below.” He winked as he stepped back and made his way back down the hall. Yet. Depending on how Alaric took the news that could ...
No, even in unforseen disapproval Alaric was not a physical threat. Louvel figured his disapproval would be far more to deal with than any kick in the *** he could deliver. Positive or negative he was confident it wouldn't require organ donors. Alaric before everything else was a man who could appreciate commitment. Lou knew the nerves were to be expected and had nothing to do with what could happen.“No fuss on what you are wearing. Just try and make it quick because Alaric and Leonie are outside waiting for us.”
Lou left Birdee to finish up with whatever it would take to be ready to head out. His steps echoed in his head but they did little to ease the rise of nerves. He wasn’t concerned that in the span of hours Leonie had changed her mind. It was the reaction from Alaric that he considered less predictable. Birdee could be a wild card as well but chances were she would be down for the engagement. It meant parties and celebrating. Birdee was a confirmed master of both.
“You good to go?” He called out after his what had to be, in the very least, his fifth round of slowly pacing the minimal interior space of the cottage. He was getting no where closer to where they needed to be. “It shouldn’t take long."

The Lioness smiled and gave a slight shake of her head at her elder’s statement. “No… I’m sorry. We wanted to talk with you together, so I’m going to wait. But I promise it’s good news. At least, I hope you find it as good as we do.” They had decided together and she wanted to be able to tell him together, too. It was something both had placed importance upon while discussing the hows and whens and wheres the night before.
She sat back in her seat, exhausted and a bit jetlagged, but there would be no outward signs of that; she was too excited, with just the hint of anxiety attached as they awaited Louvel’s return, hopefully with BIrdee in tow. The night was clear and cool, with the comforting glow of flickering firelight nearby to warm the general vicinity. She breathed deeply of the air, fresh even if they were technically indoors, and curled up in her chair, watching him as he spoke.
“Germany was beautiful. I’m hopeful we can figure out a way for you to travel there soon, to see the old estate. It is… quite lovely now, very charming. Its been expanded upon, and well-cared for over the centuries. I grew up there, but I’m not quite certain how it stayed exclusively in my branch of the family tree. The logistics are… I don’t know, worrying I suppose. But there’s got to be a way for you to visit. Have any of your… um, your bloodline, been outside Harper Rock? Maybe they have some ideas or suggestions…” She trailed off for a moment, fiddling with the sapphire ring ever present on her right hand, one that she wanted to move to her left to represent the new facet to the growing relationship brightening her entire existence. But she would wait… surely she could, just a little longer.
“The family are all well, with the exception of my grandfather, Falken. You spent some time with him over the holidays, after the Christmas party. Its all he can speak of. It made him very happy. He’s doing better, but he ended up in the hospital for a few days with another health scare. He’s home again, now, though. Also, my… mother… is back in residence. Did her best to make everyone uncomfortable for attention, but that’s nothing new.” She shrugged and looked at him again. “If she hadn’t been there, I think it would have been a wonderful visit rather than simply a good one.” She smiled at the thought of the better parts of the visit, choosing pointedly to ignore the words Lena had spoken to Lou, and to herself, throughout the very long week.
“In any case, its good to be back home,” she said, still marveling, internally, that she could call the Canadian estate ‘home’ after all those years, at last. “How was your week?”

It sounded as if Louvel needed some help or something and so she would move her butt a little faster and offer whatever it was he needed. "Sure. Give me five." Birdee closed the bedroom door so that it clicked enough to be closed. Birdee moved to her closet and pulled out a tank top that was full in fabric, unlike the one she was wearing now and yanked it off and replaced it with an all black one that had a slight swoop at the neck. She glanced down at her shorts, groaned and sighed before pulling out some black leather pants. Lou had said anything would do, so this was what he was getting.
Birdee had just buttoned her pants, when Louvel mentioned that Leonie and Alaric were waiting outside. She pulled her hair off her face, took a deep breath with an added 'gulp.' Did they know what she had done with Marcus and Santino? Impossible, right? She hadn't seen either of them in months. Not that Birdee thought she had done anything wrong, but what would they think?
Birdee slowly came out of her room and looked at Louvel, trying to see if anything implicated anything serious on his face. Far from it. Birdee smiled and nodded her head, then nudged his shoulder with her own shoulder bump. "I don't have anything planned. Doesn't matter how long it takes." Birdee assured Louvel before she bypassed him and went for the front door of the cottage to see what was going on.

Alaric’s head canted to the side, a small smile resting upon his lips. He nodded, accepting that Leonie would tell him nothing until Louvel had returned – and Alaric could be patient. Alaric could not guess what the two might have to say that he would not approve of. But this was the modern world, and there were so many things that he did not understand, he couldn’t help but be a little dubious.
”It is not so hard,” he said. ”I believed that you and Louvel wished time together, on your own. I will make it to Germany, eventually. I will think that if I could travel from there to here four hundred years ago, it will be much easier to travel now, hm?” he said. A story about a dead uncle who wanted to be buried in the family crypt back in Germany, perhaps. I private boat, a cabin below, a coffin to keep his mood stable. His family had not had the misfortune of meeting an Alaric who’d slept above ground with no coffin or crypt, and he hoped that they never would. ”It is possible. I have only met one other, after my sire. It is a question I will have to ask,” he said, calmly.
”It is good to hear of the family, though death is a sad affair,” he said. It didn’t matter how many from his bloodline he watched die of old age, it never did get any easier. Whether it was because of the fading of life, or whether it was because it was a natural progression that Alaric himself would never be privy to, always apart from, he did not know. He assumed it was a mixture, his own sorrows deep-rooted and unshifting.
”My week, it was uneventful,” he said. Nothing of import had happened while they had been gone – a state of affairs Alaric hoped to change, in the near future.

As soon as Birdee appeared he felt a sense of calm wash over him. Was that the shared blood between them at work? Could Otto be given credit for something positive outside what he did a couple decades back between the sheets? He shrugged off the lack of answers coming to his own head and followed her to the front door where she appeared to be heading. The sounds of his uncomfortable shoes connecting to the flooring trailed him and ultimately followed him out the front door behind the woman taking lead.
“How are you with planning parties?”
He figured Leonie would have every reason to have one of those deals where all her friends gathered and took her out for a night that really wouldn’t be her last evening of freedom. Leonie was never meant to be tame and he viewed any expectation that she would be was one that was sorely misplaced. The Lioness would never be given reason to do so. He certainly didn’t plan on sinking into a recliner and watching the world spin around him. Life was to be lived. No matter what would come it was only just the beginning. Louvel’s pace picked up and soon he was within reach of Birdee. He hooked his arm around her waist and growled as he hoisted her up and over to rest on his shoulder.
“Caught ya!” He started a slow jog towards the two that were waiting for them.“We can’t keep them waiting.” With the strength of his legs increasing speed soon they arrived right where he had left alaric and Leonie not long before. He set down Birdee with a wink and ran a relaxed hand through the top of his golden hair. “Now we are pretty much set. Should we invite anyone else?” Louvel set his eyes on Leonie for input. “The night is young and this will only happen once.” His hand came to rest at the back of his neck. “That I plan on.”

Leonie could not help but to smile back; she knew she was playing coy but there was little she felt compelled to do to change it. It was their news to share, together, and while the von der Marck Lioness did not believe Louvel would mind terribly if she spilled the proverbial beans without him, she would have found it unfair… and perhaps would even be slightly put out by the impatience if the tables were turned.
“We have plenty of time together on our own. I’m sorry… I should have asked you if there was any way before… I just… assumed it was not possible because of… well. You know… sunlight and the other stuff. I would have very much liked you to be there and you were missed. I’m sorry,” she repeated quietly. “I’m sure we’ll be going again soon. Maybe this time we can take the family jet. It’ll be easier to get you there that way, hopefully, with some modifications probably.” She sighed and leaned back in her seat, rubbing lightly beneath one eye.
“Well... he isn’t gone yet,” she said with a wry smile. “Falken’s a tough old man. I’ve always found him to be stubborn beyond belief. After my grandmother passed away - when they were very young - he never remarried. He swore there was never another woman to rival her and so, there was no point.” She cleared her throat a bit with a vague smile, deciding quite steadfastly to avoid thinking about the rumors of how Clarimonde had died, and what Leonie knew to be true, lest she shudder in the cool evening air. “Oskar is an only child as a result of that...” She trailed off, her thoughts drifting a bit. “I'm not really sure what he'll do when that happens.”

When Lou mentioned something about parties, and indicating Birdee might be able to plan one, her eyes lit up like it was Christmas. "Like, a party, party, or something that people call a party, but is lame as ****?" Birdee asked, because she was good at one of those, but sucked at the other one. If someone was having a party, they were having a party, party.
"Love party parties." Birdee said with a laugh as they joined a very familiar face and a semi-familiar one. "Just let me know, Lou." Birdee would get him whatever kind of party he needed and wanted, she just needed a sense of direction. "Heya Leonie and Alaric." Birdee gave the two of them a quick wave as she looked at them both, then turned to look at Lou. "I hear we're having a party." Chances are, if they were having a party, it wasn't going to be a party, party. Alaric didn't seem the type and while Leonie was cool with wine and stuff, it was unlikely Birdee could bring any real party favors to this party.

The elder nodded. Having a centuries-old vampire in their midst was new for the younger von der Marcks. It was unprecedented territory and they could not be expected to know what was and was not possible in regards to travel, or his own capabilities. The apology was not required but it was accepted, his own apology on his lips in regards to Falken and the misunderstanding that the man had already passed. They were joined by Louvel and Birdee, however, and the apology was saved for later.
Alaric glanced between Louvel and Birdee, who mentioned something about a party. Did this mean that she knew what the news was? Had Louvel told her, before they had arrived? No, there was inquisition in her eyes, as if she knew there would be a party but not for what reason said party was a celebration of. Alaric’s arms rested easily at his sides, his body still as the grave as it almost always was.
He recalled some of the parties from the past, had on these very grounds; there’d been no electricity, just torches attached to poles speared into the ground. There was always a feast, a long table laden with all the food one could imagine, fresh and steaming, more bring brought from the kitchens every five minutes. A group of five musicians would wander with their fiddles and violins, singing and laughing, the crowd dancing and carolling. Why had they had those parties? Special days, like Christmas, or Birthdays. Anniversaries, sometimes. It was not every week.
”The house is empty. It is only we four. Unless you would like me to summon the rest of the family…?” he asked. He could. They were all only a mental reach away, and if Louvel and Leonie would like the entire family there to hear their news, then it could be arranged.

“Actually if you don’t mind I think this part is something that needs to be done before we start summoning others, blowing up balloons or popping corks.” Lou was temporarily distracted by Birdee’s obvious enthusiasm at having a reason to party. Once she was privy as to the reason for celebrating she may shift gears and be less likely to sneak a call to the local and trustworthy dealer that she had on speed dial. “Yeah, a celebration is in order once I do this right.”
Louvel wasn’t exactly sure how to start since he really had never done this before. Well, actually he had but Martin was entirely different. They eyed rings while on vacation. No date was ever picked and really it was the end instead of any hope for a beginning. As for formalities, there were none to be had. He didn’t have an interest in asking his parents for permission to marry the guy out of some solid sense of respect to either one. He didn’t really like them or their judgements so it all worked out fine in the end. His mossy orbs shifted to Leonie and a smile warmed his expression.
“I have something I wanted to ask of you, Alaric.” Lou’s hand reached for Leonie’s while the arm closest to her went around and shaped the form of her lower back. He looked down at her hand in his and thumbed the surface of her bare ring finger. He brought her hand to his lips and kissed the surface. “I know it will not be entirely a surprise but I…” He looked to Leonie then to Birdee and finally back to Alaric. “We... wish to have your blessing.” His hand left her waist and disappeared into his pocket to retrieve a box he had been holding onto long enough that he thought he would never get to open it in front of anyone else. “I asked Leonie to marry me.” The sparkling ring was revealed as the lid popped up with the gentle nudging of his thumb. He smiled wide. “She said yes.”
Louvel held contact with Leonie and yet somehow managed to pull the ring from the velvet bed that held it safe until the moment had arrived. Cradling her left hand in his for support he ditched the box back in his pocket. Once his hand was free he pinched the ring purposefully between his two fingers and slid it gently over the length of her finger until it was nice and snug in place.
“We wish to have your blessing.” His eyes moved slowly with anticipation between his fiancee, his sister and his patriarch. “It means so much to have it. And before you answer I assure you with all that I am I will take care of her, honor her, protect her and love her beyond my dying breath with all that I am now and will be in the future. You have my word.”
There was no reason to be nervous. He had been admittedly on and off the days and nights leading up to the one taking place. But then and there in the moment of silence as he stood still with Leonie's hand warmly in his wearing the sparkle of the ring he just set in place he felt peaceful in the presence around them. The energy was good. The moment was perfect. Alaric's approval would be the final touch and sign that Birdee could start making some plans.
