She couldn’t remember the last time that she had gone to the flats other than to collect ears for her rituals. It wasn’t something that she enjoyed, which Juliet was sure was a side effect from Cassadee - she herself didn’t particularly care for the idea of getting dirty. She enjoyed watching the dirt and grime from a day of hard work going down the drain, really. As she looked around, her green eyes took in the shambling creatures and the few ferals that lingered around with vampire. When one shuffled too close, the brunette simply took a step back and watched as it fell, causing her to shake her head and mumble something in spanish. Internally, Cassadee chimed, “You aren’t Mexican any more.”

It was something that Juliet continued to ponder until she reached the group and hugged Skylar in return, a chuckle escaping past her lips before she pressed a kiss to the blonde’s cheek in return. “Hey.” She was used to the other woman and appreciated her greetings and personality, fully. Some made her blink at times, but they were Skylar and it could always be counted on to brighten up her mood. “Night at the club playing again?” She questioned, but then looked over to Doc, giving a nod of her head in greeting. A hand went into the side pocket of her jeans as she let her arms slip away from Skylar and she listened to the gathering, looking back to her brother with a curious expression.

He had mentioned pest to kill, she didn’t mind the idea. Sewer dwellers… Juliet wasn’t a big fan of Paladin. Before, she’d have difficulty with them. Once, she’d even teleported one for slaughter and ended up trapped to high hell; the thought itself brought her hissing in reality. “Well, I’m game. Let’s try not to get a knife stuck in their leg, but in their chest, yeah??” Although she knew there was a time for seriousness, and this was one of them, she couldn’t help the teasing smirk that played across her lips as it was directed towards Roderic. Her arms moved to fold in front of her chest as her expression fell lightly.

“Why are they out of the sewers, through, and out in the open?” Juliet couldn’t think of anything of importance in that area of the city; of course, she knew that ritual ingredients were gathered there… Freyja question brought Juliet out of her thoughts and her green eyes turned to the other blonde. “At least a ballpark estimate might be good.” Although, as she noticed no one else was arriving, at least it seemed to be a decent amount. Noticing the woman’s anger, Juliet reached out with mild reluctance between squeezing her shoulder before letting her hand fall again. A silent way to let the other know she was there if talk was needed, later.

“So the obvious question is how are we going to go about this? I doubt guns blazing would be brilliant.” The terminology made her pause a moment and she shook her head briefly. “They’ve got the training for something, at least might as well get them to when they least expect it.” Juliet frowned. Once upon a time, she would have grimaced to hear the words coming out of her mouth. But, that was before the betrayal of some, the losses and the disappointment. “I’ll help in any way possible.” Already, she begun to think of her strengths and weaknesses; power usage aside from shields, combat… Juliet fell quiet again and inclined her head. She shifted her weight.

She didn’t want her family to get hurt from mistakes.

Doc: Ric was busy acknowledging those gathered around him, as Skylar quickly wrapped Doc into a welcoming squeeze. “Hi Kid, staying out of trouble?” He gave her a lopsided grin, along with the rhetorical question. Skylar was always into something, she was cute like that. He had no idea how Ric managed to stay sane around her. But that thought was quickly dismissed as there was no time to waste on small talk, because Ric launched right into the reason He had texted them all. And as Doc listened, he straightened ever so slightly. The Paladins were grouping and practicing? This was not good. This type of thing needed to be stopped sooner, rather than later.

Skylar seemed all gung ho for a killing spree. Doc smirked crookedly at how easily she could bounce from one thing to the next with such apparent ease, when for him, it was always a chore. He liked to be methodical in his approach to things. Methodology and spur of the moment, did not go hand-in-hand. However, action was called for in this instance, in his mind, so he gave Skylar an approving nod.

Sliding his glance around to the others in the group, he saw the little one, River, almost physically wilt away from him, and take shelter behind Ric. What the ****? He wasn’t going to do **** to her but she acted like he had, and would do so again. He sighed inwardly. He would never understand females. Never. Skylar had no problem with him, she even hugged him, so why did River shrink away? Thus he decided to give her a look. It was meant to be playful, to make her loosen the **** up; and while the Leather Chick asked how many’, Doc sidled up to River and attempted to drape his arm around her shoulders and squeeze her close to him, like they were old friends.

His gaze went from the Leather Chick to Jewels, then on to Ric. “I think Jewels brings up an excellent point. Why are they practicing? As much as I am for eradicating the bastards, knowledge is power. The more knowledge we have at the onset, the better we are. Odds are against us in eradicating them one hundred percent in one attack. So if we could get some intel on them. Find out why they are now practicing in the open, and what are they gearing up for, we will be in a better place to strike them where it hurts most.” Doc paused for a moment, “Don’t get me wrong for what I am about to say, because I think we need to strike and strike fast, but we also run the risk of putting them on the alert, if we do not have a decisive victory. So what to do we know? And what can we find out.. relatively quickly?” He slid a sideways glance at River, and then looked back at Ric with devious glint to his eyes, “Sparky and I,” and by Sparky he meant River, “Can go nose around and see what we can find out. Look at her. She’s ******* adorable. Who wouldn’t want to spill their innermost thoughts to her, if she turned on that smile of hers?” Yea, he was a ********, but an amused ********.

I just turn my complete attention to Skylar as she’s practically cheering for us to kill these guys. I thought she would be against the idea, or have some pause. Some reservations. I can be surprised every once in awhile, and this certainly has me surprised. River says nothing, which means she has no objections in my mind. If she had any, she would say. Women love talking for the most part, sans River. But if she didn’t want to do something, River wouldn’t do it. Freyja, I was iffy on, but hearing her stance brings a small grin to my face before I answer her question. “It was eight, maybe nine. But that was just right there. I don’t know if they had anyone else in parts I didn’t travel to. As look outs or whatever.” I’m giving them the best intel I had, which wasn’t a lot. They were rising from their rat infested depths, and training. Something was up and something was going to happen. Where, what and when I don’t know.

Juliet chimes in that she’s down for whatever happens, which I’m not surprised at. I could always count on her being about the only Altaire to ever do anything with and for anyone other than herself. The only Altaire that ever gave two craps about the line as a whole. She’s better than me on that, I’ll admit to anyone, any day of the week. Some Altaire would never get my help, some Altaire should simply just slip into the umbra and never come back. The world would be a better place without them, as well as the line.

Doc moves near my newest Thing and I watch him with narrowed eyes. I know he’s not going to do anything crazy, but I’m still interested in what he’s doing. I know he’s up to no good, but not the no good that means any real harm. Just enough to make people uncomfortable. Him and I are one of the same, cut from the same cloth. I know people have called him a dick, and they’ve called me one too. Or an asshole. That’s one of my personal favorites.

I listen and nod my head, agreeing with Doc. Reconnaissance is a good idea, but I’m wary of sending my youngest and newest Thing with him. I trust Doc and know he’ll make sure she comes out alive, but how alive is up to the Paladins and circumstances.

“Yeah. Maybe it’s good to send two or three of you to do some snooping, while the rest of us get some stuff together.” I look at Skylar, because I know she’s been drinking. I smelled it on her, but picked to ignore it. Having a drunk, or even tipsy wife won’t do us any good. Other than some comedic relief at best-but any of us dying was not an option for me. “You know, weapon check, traps and anything else you can think of?” I look to Doc, the person with probably the most experience on taking out more than one target at a time and wait to see what he has to say.

Honestly I don’t pay much attention to what’s going on around me. I can happily live in la-la land until a plan’s made. Cos one will be made. I know that. So for now I just keep a hold of Ric’s hand. He hasn’t taken it back or anything, so until he does I’m keeping it. We’re married. It’s allowed. Besides PDA isn’t something I give much of a **** about and if Ric was wasted he wouldn’t either. Not that he is. But he could be, if he… I abandon that idea before it’s even fully formed. We can play later. Right now I definitely need coffee.
People ask their questions about our little pest problem. But before that some of them had asked questions of me. Jules had asked if I’d been playing at a club. I had been, but probably not in the way she meant. I’d told her I was partying with the guys, so kinda. Doc had asked if I was staying out of trouble. I just smirked. He knows me so well. Though in my defence, I don’t go looking for trouble, generally, trouble likes to find me. It’s like an old friend that likes to show up and screw me over whenever they’re in town. The other questions go to Ric. How many? How we gonna do it? Why are they in the open? What are they up to? Like everyone else, I look to Ric for the answers.
The fact that everyone’s still here, probably means they’re all in even if they haven’t said it. I’m up for it. I was quite vocal about that. I could feel Ric surprise at the fact and that only made me all the happier. I love being able to surprise him. I can feel unease too but I’m not so familiar with everyone else’s energies, so I’m not entirely sure who it’s coming from. River most likely, as she’s half hiding behind us. Not that Doc’s allowing that. He’s teasing the poor girl. I see Ric watching him and wonder if I’m gonna have to get between the pair. For now I’m not gonna do ****. Unless River gets more uncomfortable, then that girl’s mine, I don’t care what Ric says.
For a moment when Doc calls River Sparky, I wonder if he’s talking about me, cos that’s what Ric calls me sometimes. I’m not sure if anyone here knows that though. I choose to ignore it once I know it ain’t me he’s talking about. I love Doc, I’d be happy sneaking around with him, for recognisance sake, not like having an affair or something. Best point that out before you go jumping to conclusions. Though I did kiss Doc once. He brought Ric back to me and I was so ******* happy. Didn’t tongue him though, so it totally doesn’t count. So not the point though. What was I saying? Oh yeah, recognisance, I’d be up for that but I’m really not the stealthy sort. I mean I can be quiet if I have to be. I’ve hunted with Ric – Animals and people. So yeah. I could do it, but I have to be focused and ****. I’m not focused right now. I need that coffee.
I have to bite back the urge to shout, ‘I’m on Ric’s team’ when he suggests splitting into groups. In fact I have to put my hand over my mouth, because I know what I’m like. Don’t much care how that looks to those around me. As for Ric, he’ll know I was just about to say something stupid. And if he didn’t know I’d been drinking before, he sure as **** knows I did now, as I don’t tend to need to physically restrain my words. Hell, usually my words escape drunk or not, but I’m trying extra hard and so, yeah, it happens.
“I’ll need to change my shoes.”
I look down at my heels. They’re cute; your standard strappy blacks, but not really appropriate for hunting in the woods. In fact I’ll probably need to change my entire outfit. Need to change into something more generic. Something I don’t mind getting wrecked. If Ric lets me go change, I can grab a cup of coffee or three while I’m at it.

What am I doing here?

Her eyes searched the carpet, as if if the gore coated fabric held the answer to the ever persistent question. She knew that she didn’t belong in this group. She was barely able to contain her emotions, and the weight of her weapon continued to prove a challenge on some days. She had nothing to offer in the way of strategy, and she had absolutely no knowledge about their targets. It was just an offer to make you feel included, she thought as she pushed her hand through her hair, the movement cautious of her hood. Releasing a slow breath, she dropped her hands back to her stomach, her fingers twisting together inside the warmth of her pockets. The desire to run coursed through her veins, causing her to silently calculate the quickest route to the exit. With everyone engrossed in planning, they wouldn’t notice if she slipped out. As it was, she doubted that anyone even remembered that she was there. Isn’t that how it always is?

Shaking the nagging voice from her mind, she continued to study the grotesque blood stains on the floor, until one splatter turned into a foot. Her body tensed as she felt the air around her become charged, signaling that someone had neared her. Someone was coming into her personal space - and she knew by the shoes that it wasn’t Skylar or Roderic. Before she had a chance to bolt, a strong arm draped over her shoulders and pulled her in, sending her into overdrive. Her skin began to feel too warm, and she swore for a moment that she was going to faint. The room began to spin as the scent of his cologne filled her nose and stuck to her tongue, leaving her with a bitter and foreign taste in her mouth. Uncertainty seeped into her mind, leaving her once again stoic as she fought for control over her muscles. She hadn’t even looked up to see who it was that embraced her, but by the tone of his voice and the fact that her sire hadn’t put a bullet through his skull, she could only assume it was the only other man in their gathering.

Let me go.
It’s three easy words.
Say them.
Speak!
Oh, for fuckssake.

Bracing herself against the wall, she was about to force him off of her, before their words busted through her thoughts. They want me to do what? With a quick shake of her head, she managed to dislodge her hood, revealing her wide, heterochromic gaze. “O que? Não, eu não posso. Eu não sei como!” Her accent was heavy as panic seized her, and she found herself clutching her nails into her arm for support. They had to be utterly insane if they thought she could handle a situation where she actually had to be noticed. Realizing that she had once again spoken a language that no one seemed to know, she cleared her throat and dropped her gaze back to the floor. Wetting her lower lip, she forced the words past the barrier in her throat, the effort causing them to come out in a strained whisper.

“I… I do-d-don’t… I don’t think I---I am the b-best ch--choice for s-spy-spying.”

She could barely form a coherent sentence. The thought of her speaking to someone - anyone - and trying to pull information from them was laughable at best. If the enemies were to even notice her, they would more than likely shoot her out of annoyance than reveal their plans. There had to be something - anything - else that she could do. Even the thought of killing someone was more comforting than the knowledge that she may have to speak. Running her hand down her face, she sighed and leaned back against the wall, her thumb between her teeth.

You’re going to be utterly useless.

Feeling the hand on her shoulder, she flicked her gaze to her side, looking over Juliet’s face. She shook her head, but gave her a small smile. She knew that look. She got that sort of look often. There wasn’t anything she could do. Nothing anyone could do. This was personal. This was revenge.

Silently, she watched the pleasantries exchanged between the rest of the group. She didn’t know any of them, to be honest. She could only lay a sliver of a claim to knowing Ric himself or even Juliet, who had been with her sire for a short time before she departed from the family altogether. She lifted a hand to push a stray curl from her face, the silky golden lock tucked securely behind her ear as she let her eyes move from face to face, the warm greetings and shifting emotions cooling her hatred for the moment. Until she had one of the naked animals in front of her, the energy she burned inside of herself with that loathing was wasted.

Let them feel that rage wash over them.

Hot. Wild. Unstoppable.

Like me.

She let it roll off her shoulders for the moment, the smile creeping back into her eyes as she listened to the exchanges of questions and ideas, suggestions both good and obvious. She shifted her weight to one long, slender leg and cocked her hip, her nails tracing the shape of her belt as she thought in idle silence, until the man they called Doc sidled up to the quiet one’s side. River, they had called her. The way she flinched from him was almost pitiful, like watching an abused animal flinch away from a hand offering only affection. The way her eyes kept to the floor, she didn’t see much of her face, but could see that the man was amused with himself.

Truth be told, she thought the premise of the idea was amusing. She seemed so shy, that to recommend her for reconnoiter was bordering on wildly hysterical. She could hide, certainly. As quiet as she was, and so small and out of the way, she didn’t have a doubt in her mind that she would blend into any surrounding you dropped her in. She was a kind of subtle personality. She could appreciate a kind of beauty in that.

Ric himself wasn’t unlike her. He had that same kind of subtle power, a way of hinting that there was much more to him than that hard exterior that he placed between himself and the world. The woman at his side, holding his hand… his girlfriend, she assumed, was a little more like herself. Energetic, excited. Skylar, she had picked up in the exchanges. She liked her energy. Juliet was much more business-like, though kind and warm in the same breath. She liked that, too. Doc, the man toying with River, was a small bit of a puzzle to her. On the one hand, he seemed more experience than the rest of the group altogether. He had an air of confident wisdom, though that could easily be feigned. Many people believe themselves brilliant, when so few of them really ever were. She didn’t know him well enough to judge. On the other hand, however, he seemed light, and playful. The way he approached River’s distance wasn’t unkind in spirit, but the way she erupted at the very suggestion made her nervousness plain, if her withering stance hadn’t.

The blonde couldn’t control the laughter that bubbled up in her chest, spilling over her lips as she shook her head, lifting a hand to the poor creature. She gave River a kind, warm smile, her eyes moving to Doc, then. “I think maybe if you want to use this one for gathering information, she’s going to be best where no one can see her. Just looking at her makes her shrink away. Just look at her now. She looks like she wants to shrivel up and die under your arm there.” She laughed, and laid her hand over her abdomen.

She gave a lazy smile then, one that was both bright and pleasant, but full of a crafty malevolence layered beneath that benevolent façade as she shrugged a shoulder. “These assholes are here for only one thing. To see us all dead and gone. For good. They are trained to seek us out. I doubt that I could get away with it too easily, and I work with people every day.” She lifted a hand and pushed her hair over her shoulder to look over the group again. At first glance, they were a good match. Each of them was a different personality, a different skill set.

These paladins didn’t stand much of a chance. She flicked her eyes to Ric, before she patted at her jacket. She had plenty of ammo. More than enough. Several magazines rested inside the leather, looped in tight cinches that were easily accessible. She was always prepared. She smiled and gave a quick nod.

I’m ready to kick some ***.

The mystic wasn't entirely sure whether or not to volunteer, but she did anyway, “I can be one to go spy on them unless you can think of anything else you’d prefer me for.” She knew how to navigate and observe, but this was a little different than when she was human and out in the woods with her cousins. They wouldn't have to worry about being smelled, only seen or heard which made things a little bit easier. “I can also shield everyone if I do go, may be good to be a bit faster.” Her weight shifted from her right foot to her left as she spoke, the butt of her gun becoming more evident under her shirt as she moved around.

A small smile was given back to Freyja and she nodded, showing she understood, and then her green eyes traveled to Doc and River. Juliet shook her head, sighing. “Don't scare the girl too much, she’s very sweet. Probably will have enough issue staying this way with Ric as her sire. But the idea of having her observing from afar would be best, probably wouldn't do any of us good if she gets hurt.” Her words were good natured before she watched Skylar and wondered how much her friend had to drink. It was a concerned note, but she figured Skylar was able to do something to sober herself up, right? “I like the odds of eight or nine. It’ll be easy to work around.” Juliet said after a few moments, thinking. She thought about different ideas, suggestions to make.

She hadn't been around when the Paladin had arrived in Harper Rock, had she? She’d likely been in the shadow realm or in Mexico. One or the other. The woman couldn't remember, but she could remember the first time one of the bastards had cut open her throat. As she looked at the group, she considered appraising them one by one, finding their strengths. It would be something to suggest, later, she thought. Maybe to help figure out who could go with who during the full on attack. “I can buy what we may need off the auction.” There were usually some lower quality traps on there, but occasionally decent ones were found.

Damage was damage, really, in her eyes.

“If they're fully focused on their training, we might be able to get the upper hand without much difficulty.” She knew from experience if she was distracted with work or training, that was where her mind was and she could get lost in it. Juliet reached into her pocket and curled her hand around her lucky rabbit's foot. Her weight shifted again. “I’ll have to head over and get my custom from Refractions, but it's not too far of a walk. The sight on my .44 isn’t as accurate as my other one, though, when we do take the vermin down.” At the thought of ammo, Juliet thought she’d be good - she had a decent amount of rounds on her.

Distance could always be good, especially if one was a better shot that way. Her keys jingled in her pocket as she moved her hands slightly. She grimaced. The keys and the cash she knew she had in her pocket would certainly need to be removed from her person.

Doc: If Doc was the empathetic, sympathetic sort he would feel guilt stricken by Sparky’s reaction. He could feel her physically shaking. No. Shaking wasn’t strong enough. She was quaking. He had heard the expression, ‘quaking in their shoes’, but he had never actually witnessed it, until now. But Doc wasn’t empathetic or sympathetic. So her negative reaction did nothing to dissuade him from his plan. “Relax Sparky.. it’s not like I am asking you to have sex with them for information..” His tone was light hearted and low, mostly for her only, but the others might hear if they were so inclined. He gave her a reassuring squeeze before releasing her. He tried to make eye contact with her. “You are perfect. You’re quiet, cautious, you like to blend. You don’t stand out. You have that ‘sixth sense’ that warns you to be wary. You’ve already mastered what it takes most people years to figure out.” He gave her a reassuring smile.

The blonde spoke up, and then Jewels offered to go with Sparky and himself. Doc’s voice moved back to normal volume, though he did cast another cautious look around the room before saying, “I like the idea of the shield, thanks Jewels. And yes.. plan on being on the team. Here is what I am thinking, we are not going to confront them and try to trick them into telling us anything, it wont work. They are paladins.. they have a sixth sense, about our kind. I was being ******* facetious before. But we are going to distract them..rather I am going to distract them, while you and Sparky search their camp and use this..” He held up his phone and lowered his voice again, he didn’t want just anyone to know what he was going to say, “We aren’t going to talk to them at all. But we are going to steal all the info on their phones.. with mine. Ari is an awesome hacker. She adapted this program, that when my phone is bumped with theirs, their phone then starts sending my phone, all their contacts, recent calls and text messages..”

Giving Ric a look, he canted his head slightly to the side, “Chances are good, the hunting grounds aren’t the only area where they are training. Even if we don’t find out anything concrete, there has to be a location where they are stocking supplies. Taking out the members is important, but we need to make sure to really hurt those we may not get, for whatever reason. If we are lucky with the information we get, it will be able to be tracked back to a location. So.. do we have anyone that has some bombs.. or can make them? Because I think we need to go big.” he paused, “If you all think that’s suitable?”

Maybe they wouldn’t want to have explosions going off. It would draw attention to the area, but Doc was already thinking ahead about what story and or rumor that could be spread to make the cops think these paladins were really right-wing American Extreme Militia that were trying to take over Harper Rock as their new base of operations. The recent standoff in the States that was all over the news, made it likely the rumor would spread fast. The explosion could be put down to carelessness of the Militia. He smirked crookedly.

Everything is slowly starting to come together. I like when plans start to get tailored and everyone knows what they’re doing. I like control. Solid, controlled plans leave no error for people to screw up too badly. Two teams have been made: Doc, River and Jules, as one team, and for the other, will be me, Skylar and Freyja. It makes sense, Doc and I are probably the most logical and focused of the bunch. You know how women can be when **** starts to hit the fan. We all do. Chaos. And while there can still be some control in chaos, women alone can never find that control. This is for the best.

Skylar is on about her shoes and she has a point, but really, I think she needs to focus on something else. The fact she stinks of cheap liquor is a telltale sign of what my night might be like. Long and aggravating. I hope I won’t have to save her a lot. She could end up being more of a loose cannon than anything. “You going to be alright for this?” I ask, staring at my wife. It seemed like I was asking if she was alright with killing someone, but what I actually mean is are you alright to fight. I give her a solid look that indicates there’s more to my question then what is asked, just so she knows. My wife isn’t stupid by any means, so I trust she’ll know what I mean. More or less.

Do I know anyone that can make bombs? I think about this and then snap my fingers. “I’ve got a couple upstairs. Not the greatest quality, but sometimes I dabble in making some things if I come across all the right parts. What specifically are you thinking, Doc and where are we putting these big loud toys at?” I’m following along, but something is missing. I’m sure we won’t be putting them somewhere in the woods for the obvious reasons of ruining the grounds. And the fact that they’d come over to us, seeing what was going on.

Finally, my attention drifts to River. “You’ll be fine. You’re a shadow. You can blend in with the dark. Move around unseen. Doc is right. Besides, I know with Jules, you’ll be fine.” I look to my sister, the only woman I’ll ever claim as my sister, even though we’re not technically related, and give her a look, followed by a nod. I won’t ever admit that my Things mean much to me, not aloud, but the look I give Jules is plain and simple. ‘Don’t let **** happen to her, or I won’t be happy.’ “And if things go too south, give me a text. I’ll summon you all back to me.” It’s a strong, simple and solid plan in my mind. While I look at Jules, I give her the ‘And don’t you do anything stupid either,’ look. I won’t be happy if both of them die, and well, I might feel something if Doc died too. He keeps me sane in the Hawthorne forum. A week without him might make me want to off myself.

I’m still staring at my shoes at the conversation around me continues. These shoes are really ******* cute. Why did I wear trainers all those years? Oh right, I didn’t give a ****. I glance up at Ric. Did he even notice that I started wearing heels for him? Maybe not. I mean he didn’t see me in trainers all that much before I took to wearing heels around him, so… I should ask. Not now. But one day.
I’d probably still be staring at my feet but River starts talking foreign. What did she say? What was that? What the **** is Ric’s criteria for choosing things? Does he look for people as damaged as he is? He sure as **** doesn’t plan to fix her. Guess that’s my job. Poor thing. She’s more socially awkward than Ric and that’s saying something. Still, I helped him. Maybe. Well, okay, so I make him apologise when he’s rude and fucks off without a word. But that’s progress right?
He is kinda cute though.
I look Ric over.
Oh who am I kidding he’s ******* perfect. Till he opens his mouth.
I’ve listened to the back and forth, even if I wasn’t really giving it my full attention. The chick I don’t know has me wondering if River can even do that shadowy disappearing thing. I mean if they want her to spy on people and not get caught then that’s kinda important. Jules wants to keep her out of harm’s way, but you can’t rightly spy from a distance. Not and get anything good anyway. Not that I’m a professional Spy or anything, so really, what would I know? Personally I think she should stay far away. Like here. With me. I’m still considering that when Ric opens his yap and pretty much finalises the teams. Well **** that River ain’t comfortable with Doc, you only gotta look at the girl to see that and while I know neither Jules nor Doc would do **** to her, she don’t know that, and she ain’t like me; you can’t just go palming her off on people and expect her to cope like that. Ric’s a complete and utter arsehole if he things otherwise. Which he is, so he does. Wanker. And don’t even get me started on this bombing **** idea. Hello?! Walking trap magnet here. Why the **** is Ric keeping that **** in our home? Is he ******* trying to kill me?
Okay. So… Maybe I need to calm down. I’m wound up. I’m not doing my nervous clicking thing. Nope. I’ve got my arms folded and I’m tapping my foot while I give Ric the look that says he’s a world class ****-up and that I’m moments away from having a complete and utter ***** fit. In fact, I’m so wound up, I didn’t even answer Ric when he asked if I was gonna be okay. Probably ******* not. But like he cares.
**** it. I played nice. I showed up. I said I’d kill ****. And **** whether anyone is shielded. Probably won’t work on Ric anyways cos I pretty much inspire him daily. I always want him to be at his best, but right now his best ain’t ******* good enough.
If I weren’t on the verge of losing my ****, I’d probably ask about the weapons everyone’s planning to take with ‘em. Then again. I don’t have to ask about blades, cos I made most of the stuff this lot carry anyways.
I move over to the other half of my team taking River’s hand and pull her closer to me. I should have done this earlier. Hell I should have done it when Doc put his arm around her, but I’m not really firing on all cylinders right now.
“River ain’t going nowhere she don’t wanna go.”
I say this to everyone, looking at everyone around me before fixing my eyes on Ric.
“Just cos she’s a shadow don’t mean ****.”
I put the hand holding hers behind my back and pull her gently into place as I take a step forward, like I’m trying to shield her from everyone else.
“She’s new to this ******* life Ricky. And some people take time learning their superpowers. You don’t just get to tell her she’s doing **** and make her go with people she don’t know, even if they are family. She’s not ******* me. I don’t give a crap. I’ll talk to anyone.”
I’m gesturing with my free hand, while my other hand gently squeezes River’s to let her know that I’m on her side and that if she doesn’t want to do something, she doesn’t have to.
“So before you go putting your bossy boots on…”
I turn my attention from Ric to Doc.
“And before you go trying to add another woman to your little harem.”
I look between the two guys.
“Why don’t you give the girl a ******* choice? She already told you she doesn’t think she’s cut out for spying.”
I nod to indicate my rant is over.
Yeah, I went all out over nothing. I blame my defective vampire blood for that. But it don’t mean that what I said didn’t have any value - cos it ******* did - and if those two pricks think they can boss my girl around cos she’s just some quiet little mouse, they’ve got another think coming.
