When Solene stopped in her tracks and began to rabbit on about the officer, Myk’s slender brows curved upward in surprise – and maybe a little bit of excitement. The air around them suddenly became electrified and Myk felt the crackle of energy across his skin, teasing him from all angles. Was this woman seriously suggesting that they put aside their caution and give in to baser urges? Almost assuredly they could take him with no injury, no threat to secrecy, but this was – supposedly – an officer of the law. Generally it was noticed when one of those went missing, unlike the thousands of men and women that were murdered each night – either becoming food for Vampires or becoming Vampires themselves. Still, something about Solene’s reaction made Myk tense. It was almost cliché – too good to be true. Was this the truth of how she felt or was it some kind of a trap? Perhaps caution would be the better part of valour in this instance…

“Then by all means give him reason to pull out his pistol and shoot us,” Myk grumbled, sounding tired and bored. “Unless that thing on his belt is just for show – part of the costume.”

The Telepath was aware that his words were goading in nature and the officer raised his flashlight into the darkness, directed squarely on their faces. The light struck Myk’s eyes like a pillar of pain and he seethed a growl, shielding those pewter orbs with his hand. Myk half-expected the man to approach them, make some kind of statement about them being under arrest for whatever stupid crime he could fabricate, but when no footsteps could be heard, Myk braved the light to stare at the officer. His silhouette was strong, solid, an unmoveable boulder in the maw of the alleyway. Myk couldn’t even tell if a gun was being pointed at them in that instant and while a bullet wound was nothing really new and was nothing really fatal anymore, it still became instinct to strike first.

Despite whatever disapproval may come from his new acquaintance, Myk decided on non-lethal force. Without a second thought, the Telepath cast an illusion into the space between them and the police officer. A swarm of shrieking, flapping shadows in the shape and size of little brown bats appeared out of the ether and began to swirl around the officer. They weren’t particularly harmful in nature; any damage occurred would come from the officer’s attempt at battling these furry little illusions. Myk had only set out to distract the officer after all. If he’d wanted to kill him, he could have done that already and most certainly could have done it now. Myk wanted to move off now, but he held his gaze on Solene. The sounds of manly screams could be heard over phantom bat cries and the flicker of light from the officer’s flashlight was bouncing maniacally off the walls as he used it as a weapon to fend off the hundreds of attackers.

“Can we go now?” Myk asked her, ignoring the chaos behind them.
