Elliot often felt sorry for himself and it wasn’t an attractive attribute. He knew that, and he saw it was a flaw. He saw it as a monkey on his back that had begun to cling as soon as Pi’s blood had touched his lips; as soon as his tongue had undulated to swallow that liquid that would change his life forever. It was Temperance’s sudden sympathy that had Elliot realising what he was doing. Sinking, tainting the conversation with morbid negativity.

She got up to order the coffee and Elliot told her he liked his long blacks. When she returned the liquid was hot and the sent was intoxicating. And Elliot had a broad smile for Temperance, rather than a frown. He’d been watching the people coming and going outside; there was no commotion coming from down the street and his phone had not made a sound. Maybe it wouldn’t. Maybe he’d sit there like a dolt all night and nothing would come of it. Maybe, in the end, there was nothing to worry about, and all along he should have just trusted his girls to be reasonable adults.

”Thank you,” he said as he lifted the mug to his lips. The caffeine felt as if it hit his blood stream just by smell alone. That was why he liked long blacks so much. It was a sensory experience rather than just a taste. He shook his head after savouring that first sip.

”That’s fine. Maybe you should drag me away, too,” he said. Surely, Elliot had better things to do than sit around in a café waiting for his pseudo-wife and childe to cause some kind of eruption somewhere nearby.

”What kind of errands?” Elliot asked. A way to change the topic, even though it was perhaps personal. A rather idiotic segue, actually, but Elliot had never really been a socially adept giant. That was part of his charm—the awkward way in which he bumbled through conversations like a genuinely confused giraffe.

”My pleasure,” Temperance grinned. White billowed outward from the ceramic mug. Another round of warm chocolate stimulating her senses. The girl loved chocolate. As a young child she would beg her mother, ”please, please, may I have some more.” “Little goes a long way darling” It was tormenting. As an adolescent she was enamored at the way some brands would melt across her tongue, smooth as silk. Chocolate had a place with everyone of her moods as well. Dark and bitter when she was rough around the edges, soft and creamy when playful, or dry and chalky or fruit flavored. She’d thank the invention.

A pleasing smile grew across her face with his suggestion and inquiry. She was not afraid to tell, nor wouldn’t mind his company at all. In fact, she thought. She could not remember the last time she actually went shopping with someone other than Zodiac. As quick as it came, she then it hit her. Myk, her childe, they too used to go shopping and she needed to poke into a dress shop to find him a new hat. Indeed! Her toes wiggled. She could not tell if it was the glory of doing something with another or simply the warmth from her cup.

”Would you really not mind to come along?” She paused for only a moment. ”I must pick up a few small things for St. Nicholas Day then stop at the store for baking goods. It’s almost time to make Christmas cookies.” She beamed. Christmas was a special time of year. Her favorite for listening to holiday music from Thanksgiving night to New Years Eve. Marshmallows melting down in a pot of homemade spiked hot chocolate. Colored-twinkle lights and traditions.

Here she was now wrapped up tight like a bow, waiting to reveal some pleasant surprise, without regard of whether the man even liked shopping or this season for that matter. Though she was also delighted that sitting with someone she barely knew, felt as if she knew him more already. In truth, it had been a long time since she had any male friends. For a while there were plenty swarming her every move. She had not a reason for the distance between them now, well, she couldn't lie, there was a few good reasons. Some friends she lost due to her own gullible nature placing her in bad situations. Temperance hoped she had learned from them. She had more female friends now, and either suited her just fine.

She shook her head, forgiving the rush, "Oh, my apologies, dear. I get so wrapped up in the tender parts of life. Surely, I'd love for you to join me, perhaps point out a few shops, though if you'd rather not. It would not offend me at all." A simple pause before she probed him with a curious smile, "Do you like hats?"

Elliot had no idea what to think of the woman sitting with him. Temperance. Now that he thought about it, the name even sounded like someone had stepped out of the 40s. The way she spoke seemed to match the name. Old fashioned. When did anyone under sixty call another person their same age—or older—dear? And that was just the least of it. It was refreshing, though. Watching this woman enjoy her hot chocolate and call Christmas shopping a tender part of life. Someone who took pleasure in the small things. Someone who wasn’t so caught up in the overarching politics of the city.

Elliot hesitated. He was sitting in that café for a reason. Skylar and Pi were over there in the casino, and he was hovering nearby in case anything untoward should happen. He hesitated because he was warring with his emotions. Emotions ruled him, these days, but he was learning which ones to listen and which ones not to. Trying to learn how to allow those emotions to strengthen him rather than undermine him.

Soon enough he found himself nodding and finishing off his drink—sculling it, like it was a hard drink filled with mind-numbing alcohol. But it was just a thrill of caffeine. A hit to the system. What he needed to learn was to trust Pi. The woman who’d once been the complete opposite to Elliot in regards to emotions, was now as victim to them sometimes as he was. And it was his fault, too. In a way. They had each rubbed off on the other. But he couldn’t spend his life stalking Pi to make sure she didn’t hurt any female progeny that Elliot might sire.

”Can’t say I’ve ever paid much attention to hats,” Elliot said as the cup landed back onto its saucer with a pleasant little clink.

”Maybe it’s about time I learn something, huh?” he said with an odd kind of gleam to his eye. A conflicted one. Like it would take every ounce of willpower to walk away from the thing that was keeping him there to begin with.

”Why hats?”
