It makes more sense to have them attack on sight if they've attacked hunters/paladins.
The NPCs are all part of the Order of St. James. Not all PC paladins are trained by that order; some are trained by paladins who chose not to follow that group, and others are trained by those who were, in turn, trained by the original non-order Paladins. So they wouldn't have records of all PC paladins.

My understanding was that all PC characters were trained by NPC paladins. If all NPC paladins are Order members, then... O.o

Yeah my bad, I was actually thinking of sorcerers. But it does seem harsh to force roleplayers to be "turned" only by order paladins from a RP perspective. If some PC paladins are non-order members, then in roleplay there's no reason that some of the NPCs also wouldn't be.
Also, from a gameplay perspective it seems unfair for them to not attack only 1 class of humans.

<.< Which is why I suggested they only attack if you've attacked them. Like a raid win thing that gets reset once a month.

It's a good suggestion, but I think it's better to keep things simple for the sake of the new players.

How is "Heeeey, these guys won't attack your human if you don't attack them" less simple than getting attacked on-sight? >.>

Because it only applies to one class of humans, the way Phoenix is pitching it. The simplest solution is them just attacking everyone. There's no conditionals on that. One rule, easy to remember, easy to learn.

No, I meant it to apply to all humans across the board. Vampires set off their spidey senses - humans don't (or something).

But, there's no power that paladins possess which gives them the ability to distinguish a vampire from a human without fail, is there? They are just a little better at it than the other human classes. So perhaps humans should get attacked on sight by them, too. They'd assume that most normal humans wouldn't be wandering around in the sewers, unless they were working down there, and in that case they'd be wearing a maintenance uniform.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about that.
I thought the chi tattoos were also some kind of vamp-dar.
Although Paladins are not forced to fight undead enemies, from a roleplay perspective they will find themselves increasingly abhorring vampires and zombies. Sometimes this natural inclination of violence towards undead creatures can be suppressed, but it appears that whatever it is which gives a Paladin his or her power also makes them naturally repulsed by the undead.
I have always taken that to mean a Paladin will know when they are around a vampire, given that wherever their power comes from will be nudging them towards violence.
As fas things go, I still prefer the idea that everyone is attacked by these NPC's. It is what is most fair, and given that Footsoldiers and Zerkers are supposed to be the Zealots of The Order, I can very easily see them justifying killing/hurting anyone in the name of protecting themselves so that they can live to fight the 'vampire scourge.'
The idea for them to only attack those that attack them is a decent compromise though... and we have had a similar mechanic in the past I think. When the blood thieves would attack at day change those vampires who had been killing their members.

I personally think my human character is hard enough to play as it is, with the other what, 700? vampires in the game trying to hunt them down?
I just feel like this is fine the way it is?
Regular humans sustaining wounds are a lot harder to overcome than vampires. I also agree that it wouldnt be right for just one class to squeak by without getting shot up - my sorcerer helps a paladin. She also doesnt classify the berserkers in the same class as the one she helps - the one she helps doesnt run around the sewers naked with a shimmering sword.
And if paladins wont shoot at people in work uniforms for sewer maintenance, then Shan (my killer) is going to find one of those nifty orange vests and wear it constantly! Heck, she'd even wear a yellow helmet too if it meant she'd stop getting shot up. (even in RP!)
