The world was ever so dangerous for anyone. Even Valerian. But that didn't mean that risks should not be taken. Valerian's activities were not the most acceptable. His occupations ranged a bit. Sometimes he went around slaughtering undead, sometimes it was assassination jobs. Other times it was looking for mates. He was a Jorogomo after all. The survival of the species was a prime goal.

Today he was just from something of another unpleasant kind, but one which he considered a success. He had noticed a vampire. Unfortunately he couldn't recognize them by sight, or many more of them would be dead. He despised the creatures, a threat to humanity in his eyes. And so whenever he got the chance, without endangering himself, he'd rid them of another for as long as it was they stayed dead. This time though it was because it was starving, slowly losing it's mind and he could see it's thirst. Naturally, that meant it was time to get rid of it. On the upside there was more problems for vampires then there were before, but killing one out in the open was still questionable. He managed to push it into an empty room and dispatched it with ease, it was weak from hunger and he was not a complete slouch in combat.
However it did bring up a commotion causing him to flee to ensure his own safety and security, and where he was fleeing was down a street, down another street, until he ended up rushing up a building, sloshing through the cold water below as he did, and into the second floor where he started to catch his breath, running a hand along his weapons, "Good, another one for that Shadow Realm of theirs."

Being homeless was new to Chives. Having grown up in a wealthy household, he used to get what he wanted on demand. If he couldn’t get it at that moment, he could find some way to haggle or negotiate to not wait as long . But living as a low life bum, there were no handouts or middle ground Had to t.ake what was given. Beggars can’t be choosers.

Every day he would move to some other place to squat, mostly for his health, since he didn’t want to get sick by staying too long, and to also hide away from vampires. Today, he was staying in a flooded office building. Not the most hygienic place he’s stayed in, (most abandoned buildings he stayed in weren’t hygienic) but it was a step up from being on ground level with the fiends below. He wasn’t sure why, but vampires never followed him in high-rise buildings like this one. They probably didn’t want to take the stairs; there were a lot of them. He had to go up at least five flights to get to the second floor.

Chives was asleep on top of a desk, using a bunch of mouse pads stacked on top of each other as a makeshift pillow. He was in the middle of a good dream, finally making it to law school, when he heard a set of footsteps frantically rushing up the stairs. His eyes were wide and alert as he looked at the doorway to see who would emerge. When the man rushed in, Chives was startled. The desk suddenly became as slippery as butter, and he found himself plummeting to the floor.

“Jeez, pal.” Chives said as he slowly got up and rubbed his head. He took out a lighter from his pocket and flicked it on, a small orange glow filled the room. “If you wanted to wake me, you could’ve just shook me lightly. I’m not a heavy sleeper.” He knew to always be alert in Harper Rock. There was always a vampire, a zombie, or some other monstrosity lurking around a corner or two. Though knowing that can make someone a bit paranoid, such was the case with his mother.

“Let me guess, vampires chasing you or something?” He inquired. The man had some pretty slick weapons. He thought about getting weapons. It would be good for defense, but he hadn’t fought anyone, or any monster, before a day in his life, so he imagined he wouldn’t do quite well fending off bloodsuckers.

Valerian's eyes shot up as he heard someone collapse suddenly. Was this guy sleeping here. The Jorogomo narrowed his eyes in thought and uncertainty about the situation. But that was fine. He'd be able to handle this. If he proved a threat he'd just kill him. It wasn't like he had much to worry about. The guy was even joking so it was unlikely he was legitimately a threat anyway. Yeah, light sleeping in Harper rock was probably the best choice. You never know when someone was out there for a little extra meal. Or amusement.

He stood up, putting his firearm, end down, leaning against the wall and stretching shaking his head as he began catching his breath and heard the mans comment, "Heh, actually yes." he responded, "Freaking blood suckers. There's only a few things worse then the cannibals most of them are." He shook his head before leaning himself against the wall and brushing a hand through his hair letting out another breath.

"I tell ya, if I wasn't born here, and didn't know how to use this," He tapped the gun, "I'd have scrammed out of here a long time ago. Harper Rock is the wildlands."

He cocked his head at the man, "Just taking a nap or..." he left the rest hanging to see what the man would answer with. Most likely, he was homeless. Which probably sucked for him, but Valerian wasn't really going to do anything about it unless it benefited him. He might have been a somewhat more merciful Jorogomo, but he still was one, and there was little empathy in their hearts for most.

There was another strange fact about Jorogomo and their day to day lives. How they moved, it was alluring, strange, and smooth. Like if a carving of master artist was given life. Strangely perfect and almost supernatural. It was something he'd used in the past before. Though, he found it worked best in casual conversations and dancing with women. Keeps the other person interested even when words were failing.

"I was sleeping here for the night." Chives replied. He looked out of the broken windows to see it was still nighttime. It would be dawn in a few more hours. Soon the vampires would have to retreat back to whatever dwellings they had to escape the sunlight. Chives wasn't a morning person by nature, but Harper rock made him cherish the day time; it was the only time he could walk around without being attacked or stalked by a vampire; it seemed like they hated him the most for some reason.

“I’ve been trying to save up for a plane ticket out of here, but…” Chives walked over to the desk he was sleeping on and reached under it to retrieve an old backpack. Reaching into the bag he pulled out two grape sodas. “I can’t seem to hold onto my money long enough without getting a few sodas” He chuckled as he shook the two drinks in his hand and tossed one to the gentleman. “It’s the only thing that keeps me sane in this place, kind of like a comfort food, or in this case, a comfort drink.” He scanned the man for a moment. This guy was definitely an assassin. The amount of weapons he carried made him look like he was going to war with more than just vampires; he was going to war with everyone. But that was the case for most assassins: they were everyone’s soldier as long as they were paid well. They could work for a good cause or bad cause, it didn’t matter to them. And with a range of different targets they dealt with, they had to have a diverse arsenal.

“Charlie Simmons, professional hobo.” he joked. “But call me Chives instead. So, who was your target today, Mr.Hitman.” he drank his soda, keeping his eyes on the man.

(OOC: sorry got really cought up, still pretty busy)

Valerian shook his head as Chives said he was sleeping their, appearing to take pity for him. He looked outside into the distance, he thought he saw someone across the street. Then they seemed to be gone. His attention shot up, though he still heard what Chives was saying, mentioning wanting to get out needing a plane ticket. The man mentioned not holding onto money long but finished saying it was because he kept getting sodas and tossed one to Valerian.

The Jorogomo looked at him curiously, and then at the drink, not opening it yet. Having no intention of getting a spray in the face by some carbonated drink that was just shook up, he'd let it sit a little. Besides, he wasn't sure how much he could trust this guy. He was being analyzed in turn. If Chives was a thief he imagined he looked both like a great and terrible target. Great because the weapons were in good condition as were his clothes, bad because he was armed and didn't look that unhealthy.

The guy introduced himself, assuming it even was his real name. Then gave a nickname after calling Valerian Mr. Hitman, "You've got to protect yourself in these lands. That, and you can make a killing...I guess literally, if you know what you're hunting for. I-"

He was definitely seeing someone, he looked out the window more carefully and was quite sure he could see straight through them, he grabbed his gun off the wall, though he wasn't sure what it would do in this situation, "Can you see that?" he asked.

It almost seemed like it was...stuck? Just some vague shadowy figure lurking there but, it seemed almost like it couldn't go anywhere.

"See what?" Chives asked. He moved to the window to take a quick glance. His eyes darted around the dark landscape briefly. He couldn't see much because of the darkness and the lack of streetlights on this block. "You sure you saw something? 'Cause I can't see a thing. It's nearly pitch black outside. I wish I had a pair of night vision goggles."

Chives stuck his torso out of the broken window, carelessly ignoring the apparent risk of falling out of the building. He surveyed the area once more, then his eyes stopped on something, or rather, someone. The figure was standing completely still like a statue. It was made of complete darkness and yet somehow it was slightly transparent and see-through. It was like a shadow broke off from its human host and physically manifested itself in the real world.

"What the hell is that?" It definitely wasn't a vampire, and neither was it a zombie. It looked like some kind of wraith or ghost. Chives kept looking at the human apparition. It stayed in its pose for awhile longer, then looked up him. It was faceless but it could still see him.

Chives quickly pulled himself back inside, hitting his head on the top of the windowsill as he came in. "Ow!" He said as he rubbed his head. He speedily zipped up his bag and put it on his back. "Don't know about you, pal, but I think it's best that I get a move on. Whatever that thing was, it saw me." He clumsily raced to the door leading to the stairways; that action alone left him tired out, despite moving only a few meters. "I'd suggest you do the same. I'm pretty sure your guns won't do a zilch to it, if you try to kill. It has no volume whatsoever. You'd be shooting air."

Valerian looked out with concern especially as Chives seemed to think there was nothing there. However after immediately making Valerian believe the man was at least a little bit...eccentric, by leaning out the windo fully, he stopped and finally saw the thing. Valerian had only known of a few possibilities here.

Fae, a ghost, or a vampire power. And those were three very different possibilities. As Chives pulled back inside from surprise and immediately tried to convince Valerian to leave the Jorogomo looked at him and chuckled about the reason why, "If you really believe it's out to kill. Do you really think that you can go anywhere it can't follow?"

Heavy footsteps started rushing up the stairs and Valerian looked out the window to see it gone. He gripped his gun. The people coming up stairs, they were paladins. And they had an interesting offer to make. One that just shouldn't or maybe couldn't be refused.

"Well the spirit friend seems to have run off, if it was even there in the first place. Could have been an illusion. Don't know how many vampires you've met but eventually you just accept they can do more things then you'd like."

The weight of the door pushed against his shoulder as he stared back at the hitman. The guy was right. No matter what he did, the vamps would have a way to find him. With the plethora of powers and abilities they had, it would be painfully easy for them to do. It was No man’s land down there, and if he stepped foot outside before daybreak, he’ll end up getting drained dry or turned. And neither fate enticed him at all.

Chives scratched his head, forcing a smile as he walked away from the door. “Yea...I’ll stay for a little longer. What harm could a few more hours do?” He gulped down his pride and returned to his desk throne. He reached into his bag to take out another soda. When he snapped the pin on top of the can, the crackling from the drink was drowned out by fast, heavy thuds. The floor shook as they got closer. The sound panned from left to right as it wound up the wall. The rumbling stopped when it seemed to reach the outside of the door to the room. Chives squeezed his soda while he waited for the visitors to enter.

Several men entered the room one behind the other as they ducked their heads through the door frame. From their silhouettes in the darkness, they seemed to be of muscular build, with one being significantly larger than the other two. The larger man of the trio stepped to the center of the room while the other two stood a few meters behind him, one on his left and the other on his right.

One of them switched on a flashlight and aimed it at him and the hitman.Their expressions were stoic and unmoving as they looked at him and the hitman. There was no hair or facial hair present on them, with the exception of the leader, who had a full head of hair that bridged off into sideburns and into a beard on his face. Runic tattoos covered his arms, and there were probably more under the black tank top he was wearing.

A group of Paladins. They must’ve been on patrol. As fanatical they may be, they certainly do a better job than law enforcement when dealing with unruly vampires. The amount of times they saved his hide from bloodsuckers were too many to count. Chives shielded his eyes from the light shining in his face.“....Heya, fellas! Wonderful evening we’re having, am I right? Did you come up here with us to watch the sunrise too?” Chives said. The trio stared at them, looking for signs of vampirism. Not the most outgoing bunch, either.

“Are you guys are looking for something?”
