Chapter Impact: Aid Admin

Chance sat at the terminal as his fingers flew across the keys, hitting them faster than he ever had before. His new found strength and speed served him well these days as he slowly picked up old habits and new tricks to them. Once he would have considered himself good with the computer but too much time had passed and too many things had changed since that time but for now he slowly rebuilt his scripts to help as he found the time. In his search he had started to uncover information from some ‘Administrator’ but he had no idea who that was but the information he read disturbed him greatly. He followed link after link as he read the information to make as much sense as possible of it while he entered notes into his phone on locations and people to check out or remember.

The cafe was all but empty, he sat in a dark corner with a clear view of a majority of the floor but especially the door. The attendant discounted his use of the computers and now busied himself with his own work without bothering him, although the man kept an eye on him whenever he thought Chance wasn’t paying attention and attempted to see what he was looking into. He kept the monitor so it couldn’t be viewed by anyone, as he read the articles he swirled a half cup of coffee around inside the cup. Another habit of his that he missed more and more now that he wasn’t able to drink it anymore, not that it mattered.

He snapped a picture of the list of weapons caches around the city that he found along with a schedule of shipments to the warehouses. He really doubted the lists to be correct or accurate but would it be worth the effort to check out? The more he looked the more he saw possible and the more he saw that he figured was nothing. Report after report of criminal activity, financial transactions, and gang activity but most he quickly decided were straight up false or guesswork. A few though read like a real report or at least some actual facts inside so he noted a few links as he flipped page after page and the hours ticked by.

Chance leaned back into his chair as he mulled over the findings of the night, it felt different to actually care about anything again. It had been some time since he cared about anything other than his own recent ‘changes’ and the current events were confusing to be sure but also a distraction to the mind that he needed. He knew sunrise loomed closer as he started to scrub his work from the computer, he had plenty of information to look and think about for a while. The hacked phone would suffice for any quick information he needed.

Once the evidence of his use was cleaned off the terminal he logged off as he headed for the door. He nodded at the attendant politely “Thank you for the use of the computer but I’m through with it.”. The chill of the morning air didn’t bother him as he found his bearings and turned for the hotel where he could settle in for a good quiet sleep. He quickly walked down the side of the street while he deliberated on the information.

He approached the third warehouse carefully as it was darker and more foreboding from the previous ones had been. He really doubted if the others housed weapons and explosives of any kind with the lack of security on them although he wouldn’t doubt one of them was a front for a cartel. The unsavory characters that lurked around the building could easily worked for one of the cartels but he was not sure which one it was, he snapped a few pictures on his phone from a discrete spot before he continued to the next warehouse.

He walked up slowly toward the warehouse, although the building need pait and work done it was far from falling apart. The windows looked solid and were frosted so he couldn’t see inside at all. The door he approached was new, solid, and steel. The lock and deadbolt both looked brand new, just as he was about to reach to see if it was locked when he noticed the camera above the door. Without knowing if anyone was watching the cameras, he intentionally tripped over his own foot and stumbled against the wall to hide his previous intentions from prying eyes.

Although he slowed down slightly, he continued past the door as he watched more carefully now. The door also had a keypad to the side, he thought he could see tabs on the windows for a security system as well but couldn’t be sure without closer inspection. Inside the windows he thought he saw some movement in front of the lights that suggested guards or at least workers were inside even at this hour of the night. He turned the corner and followed the building onto the adjacent street while his inspection continued. The security on this side was as good as the previous and even the service entrance was newly replaced with a high security door although it was huge in size. Large enough to handle a large box truck at least and the street appeared to have frequent heavy loads where it crossed over the sidewalks.

Chance continued on down from the warehouse to make sure he didn’t raise too much suspicion before he crossed the street and made his way back toward the warehouse. He stalked from shadow to shadow as best he could until he found a fire escape that he could climb easily to the roof. Once on the roof, he looked around until he found a nice view of the service entrance below him. Near the stairs down into the building he was on was a couple of overturned buckets and tone of cigarette butts scattered around the area, the unmistakable smell of marijuana assaulted him as he picked up one of the buckets to use as a stool while he watched.

The night dragged on while he watched and contemplated his next moves. Unsure if his own hacking ability would get him through the security, he was fairly certain that he couldn’t do much alone against this kind of a target except a bit of surveillance and hope others could do something if it actually panned out. Regardless he found it a change from the monotone he had been in since his turning. He put together an email as he waited with the pictures of the cartel warehouse, location, and as much information as he could before he slowly searched out contact with as many media outlets as he could find and made a list in his notes for easy use when he decided if he should send the information and made up several anonymous email addresses to use so he wouldn’t draw attention to himself.

Suddenly the roar of a vehicle brought his attention back to the street as he watched an armored car roll up and sit in front of the door. The service door rolled up from an armed guard just inside the door, the guard was outfitted in black tactical gear and what appeared to be automatic weapons. As soon as the armored car entered, the guard lowered the door and the street quieted again.

Over the next few hours several more vehicles came and went, three more were armored cars and two others were box vans and all seemed loaded when they arrived but left considerably lighter. After the first vehicle he noted the license plates of the vehicles along with as many details that he could make out until his patience ran out.
