PVP and You

Post by Cliff Worthington »

I make it known I'm not a big fan of PVP, and prefer PvE, but I know a lot of people do. I want to start a discussion to find out a few things, that being.

1. Why you do like PvP?

2. Why you do not like PvP?

3. Why you don't PvP anymore if you used to?

4. What would bring you back to PvP?

Please keep it civil, and please be informative. Everyone who answers atleast 3 of the 4 questions in the next two weeks will be entered into a drawing for a prize. Please don't try to play the system and try to get multiple enters with multiple accounts, also any drama will get you removed from the drawing.

Thank you in advance.

1. Why you do like PvP?
I could likely take or leave PvP but under the right circumstances it can be quite fun. This is especially true when you're friendly with the players of the characters you're fighting.
2. Why you do not like PvP?
Two main things for me:

General lack of OOC communication which I think generates a fair bit of drama and hard feelings. While PvP should be an IC action for IC reasons, sometimes a few words can make the difference between hard feelings and good community - especially if the IC reasons aren't immediately obvious.

The mix of RPers and Gamers. Given gamers don't need an IC reason to hit someone, that can cause issues with roleplayers.
3. Why you don't PvP anymore if you used to?
N/A
4. What would bring you back to PvP?
Didn't really leave it, but I do have ideas that would see me wanting to participate more in it.

A) Changing the Gauntlet as I suggested here as I think it'd give people an option to enjoy PvP without having to worry about their character dying, being hospitalized, or being crippled. I honestly think those are things that keep people from holding 'fun' events like fight nights, sparring matches, or tournaments.

B) Lowering the Territory Cap. There's currently 19 territories with a cap at 10 per a faction which means it's very easy for two established factions to hold the entire city between them. Which presents a catch-22 - lowering the cap would require more active factions interested in TBs but factions aren't likely to be interested in such things without the limit lowered.

C) Mastery Powers and Enchanting. I recognize these are two rather large systems and will take months, but both, especially enchanting, could change the way we PvP currently.

D) More friendly PvP competitions or events. Kind of goes hand in hand with point A. Would be nice if such things didn't have to end in deaths/cripples.

Even though I don't actively PVP in Path, I'll give my answers based on past games I've played.
1. Why you do like PvP?
In most games I generally don't, unless it encourages RP, story-based competition, or faction interaction and teamwork. I'm most likely to love PVP if it's strategic rather than action based or repetitive, and where you have to work as a team.
2. Why you do not like PvP?
When there's no point to PVP other than dying / killing over and over again, it's no fun. There has to be a reason, just as with any game there has to be a reason for fighting.
3. Why you don't PvP anymore if you used to?
With Path, it's because I didn't think it was fair for me to play competitively at my own game. With other games (similar games), I don't anymore simply because I don't have time to waste on getting good / putting in faction hours.
4. What would bring you back to PvP?
People. PVP needs a large community to work out well.

1. Why you do like PvP? I love PVP In path it used to take skill to find people and actually get them dead it also took team work . Not so much anymore its gotten mechanical and The reasons for It got taken away … Crow was fun having the bounty list was fun … this is gotten to be just moving characters around and going square to square killing mindless NPC … and writing pretty stories I liked the challenge of having to go against another player.

2. Why you do not like PvP?

3. Why you don't PvP anymore if you used to? Game Mechanics mostly

4. What would bring you back to PvP? Bring back the bounty list .. make there be consequences other than those dictated by game mechanics or Developers. Path isn't a PVP friendly environment anymore it was when it was first started then restriction after restriction started happening slowly ,Until PVP is mostly dead here and no one has any interest in fighting trying to get people to see why they enjoyed the game they have talked and talked and talked most have either moved on or quietly sat hoping beyond hope that things might change because they have invested so much not only money but of themselves into this game that they really don't want to let go but are having to because They really haven't been heard or they have been and it just wasn't what others wanted.
Yeah I got killed a lot but you know what it was fun I remember having parties in the Shadow realm lots of fun stuff happened back then with the killing and even the fighting In and out of character heck people that killed me I have a respect for . It was Epic and memorable … So don't know if you consider that Drama it really isn't or intended to be.

1. Why you do like PvP?
The interaction between people. I used to love doing strategy. Having to locate people, fight through stuff. Mostly the ooc communication that went along with it.

2. Why you do not like PvP?
The attitude of the players mostly.

3. Why you don't PvP anymore if you used to?
Attitude of players and the rise of the all powerful factions. It strangled the pvp scene. No point in PvP if you automatically know you'll be killed, and possible on going hostilities. I liked the bounty system to an extent, but when you're a gamer, and 7 days of shadow realm eats into your leveling causing you to always stay weaker.. why risk being killed?

4. What would bring you back to PvP?
I don't really think anything will, unless I get brought into one of the big two factions. Other than that, I'll PVP only if its a chapter thing like the broussard raid, or Im forced to and I know I have a chance.

Now that I've got some time, I'm gonna answer proper.
1. Why you do like PvP?
I came to the game from RB. It's a bit of a change from your typical gaming session (at least the ones that I'm interested in) and I prefer it. Past point and click, I like that even an underdog could do damage enough so it's more a game of chance when fighting live rather than scripts, stats and turn base.

As Cliff mentioned, it's a strategic matter and PvP is sometimes a little more relaxing than say if I decide to get out my chess board.
2. Why you do not like PvP?
There's typically a negative stigma that comes into play when you're a more aggressive player - but I've began to feel that if you communicate and it's an active agreement on both sides, it's far more enjoyable. Some of my favorite PvP fights in the past were against Alexandrea and Enver Marshall II's players, really.

The lack of communication between players in the present has also dimmed the enjoyable aspect - some people don't care if their characters die but would prefer to actively participate in a live fight. The assumption of ulterior motives or that certain groups of players do it just to be rude kind of turned me off to the entire concept for a while.

It took me a while to see that I definitely prefer one on one fights rather than feeling boxed in, if that makes any sense - and I've realized this in a few grid based games that I play. If you want to kill [that'd be a discussion thing if permanent], harm or attack my characters, fine. Just message me and be like, "Hey! Even if we don't write it out, do you want to do this?" and chances are I'm not going to argue against it.
3. Why you don't PvP anymore if you used to?
See above.
4. What would bring you back to PvP?
I really haven't left it - but I don't do it as often as I used to, mostly due to lack of time. I like a lot of Marina's suggestions, actually and would love to see some implemented, really. Especially the idea of having more gauntlet/pvp friendly competitions. It could be a good way to draw in new players into the grid aspect and gain more community.

I'd like to do more with my little sorcerer here, eventually, so it'd be nice to have something to look forward to.

Communication between players would be a nice benefit - even if it's just an OOC PM of "hey, I'm gonna do this at this time, do you think you can make it" would be fun, especially with the holiday season coming up for those who work in retail and the other service industries. We're all players in the game and sometimes I think when people get too caught up in winning, we don't remember that we're all people; that's not fair to any one.

1. The people... playing with others who get that get it's JUST a game and will have fun with it and you.

2. The people who weren't fun to play with, nuff said.

3. It's changed a couple times since I last PVP so I need to reread all the changes and see what actually is different from when I used to PVP or if it's the same as before again cus atm I'm not really even sure? lol

4. Time mainly, bottom line. I just don't have the time for games like I used to. With winter coming I will (I hope) get some more of that but I want to get caught up on my roleplaying first and foremost. And then I'd have to find like-minded peeps to PVP with, lol.

I know this is over but I just found it, so will add my 2cents. I will preface this by saying that most of my PVP experience is in RB. I have extensive experience there leading and fighting in wars. The use of scripts has ruined it for me, so I don't anticipate getting into future fights. I recently brought Loretta over from Blood, where she was in a territorial fight once. It did not go well. My group were all rookies at Path/ Blood and were up against a group of experienced Path/ Blood players who had much better weapons, powers and knew how things worked. (as in what do you click to use powers/ weapons? The wiki is not helpful in this area). Plus the way the system worked, it was a time that the other group was midday, and we were after midnight on a weekday. Hello, we have to work. You want an actual fight, let the players set the time, not the automated system. That experience soured me on fighting in Path.

1. Why you do like PvP?
If done well, it allows player interaction. Unfortunately, it is seldom done well. I don't care if my character dies, if I get to write up the fight.

2. Why you do not like PvP?
players crossing, and taking IC comments personally. This is a game. Lets have fun.

3. Why you don't PvP anymore if you used to?
Don't PVP in Path because I don't know how.

4. What would bring you back to PvP?
Tutorials, wiki guidelines.
