Another cycle, another round of hacking.

It kept her mind occupied when she was doing trivial things. Not that she considered working in her garden trivial, but there was only so many conversations you could have with plants. Her decision had been made, so there was nothing to do, for now, except continue searching and waiting to see what course of action would be decided upon. No more tears or doubts. If, in time, she could no longer handle this odd state of existence she had another plan. Hire a professional assassin (oh yes, they were out there if you knew the right spots to look) and put a contract on herself. Of course the assassin would find her well outside the range of the Nexus and when he or she discovered her she would have her affairs in order and made peace with the universe as best could and hope the goddess would welcome her into the Summerland when she passed from this world to the next. Perhaps she would hire a paladin to do it. A final gesture of kindness on her part. She knew those holy rollers got a stiff (or wet) one when they killed a fanger. Someone might as well get a smile out of the deal.

”And how are we felling today?” Part of her mind sent out to the Lisianthus as she watered it while the rest of her thoughts smashed their way through another feeble sentinel trap in the system. She smiled as her fingertips lightly brushed the brightly colored petals of the flower, encouraging it’s unique aroma to float into the air for her sense of smell to take pleasure in.

She took a seat next to the Lisianthus and consulted her list. Like anything else, plant care depended on a schedule. Some needed attention daily, every other day, once a week and so forth.
”Can’t leave anyone out now, can I?” as a couple of source codes were taken and downloaded. It made the hassle and waste of energy worth it.

Zodiac grabbed her watering can and the basket of plant foods and stood up. Making her way across the room to where her Hydrangea was standing puffed up and strong.
”Oh, you have come up so big and beautiful this season,” she purred.

run Decrypt V6 (email fragment)

”Now, a bit of food, yes? You are due. Can’t have a pretty thing like yourself starving now, can we?”

run Transfer V6 (email fragment)

”Okay, give Momma a second, dear one.” she ‘said’ to the flowering plant as she focused on her latest prize.

File "Email Fragments" has been downloaded.
+ After some extensive digging around in the file, you find a fragment of text which reads: "One member of the cleaning crew keeps comparing project Revital to MKUltra. I don`t see him having a job for much longer."

”What the **** is MKUltra?” She had never heard the term before. Her thoughts withdrew from the hack and began exploring the internet at large. One of her personal faves, Wikipedia, was her first stop. Sometimes their info was slightly off the mark, but normally it could point you in the right direction of the truth of most things.

Project MKUltra, also called the CIA's mind control program, is the code name given to a program of experiments on human subjects, at times illegal, designed and undertaken by the United States Central Intelligence Agency.[1] Experiments on humans were intended to identify and develop drugs and procedures to be used in interrogations and torture, in order to weaken the individual to force confessions through mind control…..

Her mind jumped to other pages, but found the same descriptions in basics.

Why did all this keep not surprising her? Could she be at least wrong on something? Would every child of the night come pouring out into the streets to be cured? Certainly not and some could hide themselves very well if needed. (Example: herself) No, a healthy does of a drug cocktail as they ‘cured’ (or worse yet, enslaved) other vampires. “Now tell us friend, what other vampires do you know? What are their names and where could we find them? You ought to show your gratitude for us curing you by helping us help others, yes?”

She sat down next to the Hydrangea and rubbed her temples in frustration.
”Oh goddess of light, save us all from these fools. Living and unliving alike.” she prayed. She was smart enough to know not every scrap she found was gospel, but too many of them were painting a negative image now. Bad enough it could cause problems for the night feeders, but who is to say methods could not be used on the living as well? Better living through chemistry and mind control?

The stillness of her garden was all she could hear outside of her racing thoughts. One of the few dreams in life she had that was brought to life thanks to her new state of being. She could never afford or maintain something like this when alive, let alone import such rare blossoms to become part of it. A small whirring motor and the bubbling of water and the thin hum of lights above joined in eventually. The entire effect a soothing type of white noise that normally helped her calm, focus and re center herself. She telepathically sent her latest finding for Alexandrea to add to the pile and then blanked her mind. Her skills at levitation kicked in and lifted her up from her seat. Arms and legs slipping into a lotus pose in reflex as she hovered between heaven and earth and considered the situation.

[AGAINST THE CURE]

Timing: Early morning hours of the 9-16-17

Doc made no comment to her question about where were the parents. He could have told her, the ‘children’ were runaways. The government preferred teens, because they were already missing, the young were far more resilient in recovery than adults. He could have, but he didn’t. Lizzie was a mother, that knowledge may upset more than what would be warranted at this time, because those children were long since gone. However as her questioning turned to vampiric children, he shook his head in the negative. “No I haven’t.. Not in a long while.”

He was silent, as he mulled over her words. His visceral reaction at reading the fragments when Lizzie had first sent them, was a violent one. Had he had the location, he would have gone in guns blazing. But now having had time to think about it and get past his immediate reaction, he had come to the conclusion, that should he find cure and the ensuing documentation.. He would weaponize it on the vampire troublemakers.

The slow appreciative smile he gave Lizzie, as she expressed that she too had a very similar thought, showed openly just how much he appreciated her comment. He had been worried, she would not see things from his point of view. Having them be on opposite sides of the issue, had been a prominent concern of his. He was willing to bend, if need be, but it appeared that may not be a first concern as he had thought.

[For_Peace]“If I could get my hands on it.. I wouldn’t destroy it. I agree there are misfits.. That should have never been sired. As you pointed out.. Children. But there are also, those that, are too ******* stupid. They have zero concept of discretion. Zero fore-thought about what their actions ‘could’ cause. Those are the ones, that as you pointed out, simply should not be apart of our species.”[/For_Peace]

He had been about to say more, when his cell rang. Frowning, he fished it out and glanced at the screen. His frown deepened, what the **** was Aden calling about? Doc gave Lizzie an apologetic look, “Speaking of.. “ His tone was dry, “I need to take this.” He swiped and answered.

Doc wasn’t even given a chance to speak, before Aden was speaking rapid fire into his ear. “Woah. Slow down. How did you find out and who told you?”

Doc sent Lizzie a telepathic message, ~Employee.. He knows about this ‘cure’. He is a loose cannon.. ~

She had not expected an answer, yet...somehow Elizabeth still wanted to know where the parent's had been when their children had become part of an experiment where they had been on the same wave length of that of a rat. His thought about the 'Cure,' brought Elizabeth's thoughts to the present time and her focus back on the things in which she found. "Yes. We need to speak about that 'cure.' Elizabeth murmured before they were interrupted.

She nodded her head, then moved to sit at the conference table, parusing through the file and the pictures within them. Terminated. It was a cold word for something that had so much life within it. Could have had so much purpose and opportunity. Terminated. Each one. Terminated. She sighed, shook her head and tried to piece together her thoughts about Doc's desire. He wanted to weaponize it, to an extent, yet it didn't always had to be used as a weapon, did it?

First, she would address the ease of her finds in the email servers, and her pause for concern. What if it were a trap? What if it were not a cure at all, but a rumour? A rumour to bring vampires to them for whatever reason and purpose? Death? Captivity? Any number of possibilities. And finally, she wanted to address what he was going to do. If he did too much...it could hinder things later for him.
Why are you taking me through troubled waters, I asked? Because your enemies cannot swim, he replied.

The red-head had returned to poking at the various forums to which she had access after quickly replying to Mortll’s statement about her businesses. Oddly, the human-only one was still silent as the grave. It was rather worrying given how opinionated the group usually was on matters that involved the undead. Even the oddball ‘Fact or Fiction’ site was fairly dead, save the dead thread that had been resurrected by some idiot, aptly entitled ‘To the Asshole’.

Some email fragments that had been posted caught the blood-thief’s eye. Here was the first glimmer of information beyond what was in the news. The one that peaked her interest the most spoke of the cure being fast acting and with no discernable side effects. On the surface, it was promising, but the reality really would depend on their method and scope of their testing. How they defined a side effect was also a question.

The text tone on her phone demanded her attention once again a new message arrived. Without looking, she assumed it was from Azraeth given the timing. The Mystic had always been tolerant of her presence from the earliest point she could remember. How, when and where she had met the man was a mystery but she could recall many times he had greeted her in a friendly manner without any sort of hesitation – well before she had been graced with a place in Dragomir or Voodoo Dragons. From those, she had gotten to know him better and had fought by his side; he was certainly a good friend and ally. Swiping the screen of her phone, she read the message; a soft groan of frustration filled the air. With a sigh, she typed up a quick reply.

[text] Of course they are. No offense, but too many react rather than taking a moment to think logically – vampire and human alike. The best I’ve found so far is that the government is indeed involved and the cure supposedly works with little to no side effects. Given we have no idea their testing methods, I’m not sure how much water that holds. I agree getting the cure out of the hands of the government and into a safe place is a great idea. Where that is, I’m not sure. What to do about it afterwards – I’m not sure I’m in the position to have a say on that. Be safe. I’m going to keep digging and likely pop by a bit later.

She had barely hit send and set the phone on the desk before the tone sounded again. This time she was quite sure it wasn’t Azraeth; no one could type that fast. Hell, even with the mind link to the net, she wasn’t even sure one could think their message that fast. Curious, she opened the message to find it was a group message for Voodoo Dragons from Mortll. Her nose wrinkled as she read it; she wasn’t particularly fond of the idea of destroying it; it wasn’t a decision for a single person (in her opinion) and she honestly thought that studying it was a wise idea.

She had just tapped the reply button to state what she was sure was about to be an unpopular opinion when the phone vibrated in her hand. The alert box slid down the top of the screen to announce another text from Azraeth. Reading it, she was noted it was in reference to Mortll’s text rather than a reply to her own. It wasn’t a huge deal; she just liked knowing context when multiple threads were floating around. It was a quick read and she decided to reply to him first.

[text]It sounds like she does plan to destroy it. Something tells me that would not be a wise course of action, so I hope she can be persuaded otherwise. She may not want it for herself, but unless it’s studied, it’ll be hard to say what the true intention for it was. I’m still going to visit the facility, I just don’t know how deep into the chaos I’ll get. For now, I’m going to keep an eye on things and see what information gets posted.

That he understood she might be out for the count on this was a relief. She was already walking a fine line between two worlds so was it wise for her to show up at a government facility to fight? That was something she had yet to decide. That she would have to tread lightly was a given should she end up fighting. This was certainly one of those times that being between the two groups/worlds/species –whatever someone wanted to refer to them as – was more of a hindrance than a blessing.

Az found himself waiting outside of the facility, the high points of his face bathed in the blue light coming off of his screen (because he wasn’t about to just stand there looking like a weirdo), while the rest remained relatively darkened by the cast of shadow created by the moon. The other Voodoo Dragons hadn’t shown up just yet, which gave him time to catch up on some YouTube tutorials for handmaking books, including sewing page into leather casing. He was watching someone use an awl to jab holes into a case when his phone buzzed in his hand, and a little voice bubble icon appeared in the top corner.

Seconds later, he was reading both replies from Lea, his thumb poised over the screen so he could scroll up and down to make sure he was seeing it all.

To Amalea : The whole mob mentality thing is real, and reactionary. People are angry about the cure, and I can only imagine what the backlash for hasty actions are going to lead to. Sadly, there’s not much that can be done about it at this point. Thanks for doing research, by the way. I will look forward to seeing you here. I agree with you that we should learn more, but the timeline for this seems to have really escalated. I really wish that someone would have put together some kind of town hall meeting to talk about coming up with a plan. I think that’s my biggest complaint here. As long as information remains spotty, and the community remains fragmented, **** is going to keep hitting the fan. Over. And over. And over again. I know this is turning into a bit of a ‘beating a dead horse’ situation, but without a unifying voice, we aren’t really taking responsibility for anything. We’re just shiftlessly moving through a void with no direction. I just worry that the path we keep letting ourselves be led down is one that ends abruptly.

He hit submit, and went back to his YouTube video. The truth was that people like Amalea were in an equally precarious position. She had the delicate job of trying to balance herself on a razor thin line between two places. The darkness and the light. The past and the future. She was tied to vampires, but she could walk safely into the proverbial and literal light. Only time would tell how everything was going to shake out.

A voice spoke into his mind, and he recognized it immediately as that of his sire. He figured the man was probably still inside of the building, still working his way through numerous guards. Of course, rounding up the Dragomir was a lot like herding cats. He figured if anyone was really in danger, they would reach out via CrowNet, or telepathically. Maybe via text or phone. Either way, he could be there immediately if need be, but he felt like he really had things to do at the facility.

So his response back was a simple one.

Stay safe.

Cellissee leaned back into her seat and blew a strand of hair out of her face in frustration.

"Locked out of the system," she muttered in a mocking tone, "I'll lock you out of the ******* internet...yeah." She quickly pulled up a game of solitare as she noticed a couple of what looked like college students walking in her direction. She gave them her most innocent of smiles as they glanced at her on the way out of the cafe,"You never get that last ace ya know, psh." As soon as they passed she closed the window. She sat upright and wiggled her fingers over the keyboard thinking of her next move.

Another lock out and several muttered curses later Cellissee jumped up out of what she will always call, the super comfy chair, "Ohhhhh, what, in yo face mother ******, that's what I thought!" She noticed all the chatter in the cafe ceased and everyone was currently looking in her direction with a variety of facial expressions, "I don't even care, it was awesome," she said dismissing their judgement and sat back down. She was in, and not only that, she had struck pay dirt. A few tedious minutes later Cellissee's mouth dropped...
"Subject 025 has gone missing. She was released as part of the reintegration protocol, for long term testing and observation, but she hasn`t done any check ins."
"Who the **** is that?" Cellissee exclaimed in the loudest whisper ever, "Who the ****?"

Cellissee felt a surge of anger, she knew they were up to no good. Experimenting on people, on vampires, what's the difference as far as she was concerned, they were doing some shady black ops ****. Who was subject 025? Why didn't she check in? Did they kill her? Did someone else kill her? Or kidnap her? Was she contagious? A slur of what ifs filled her head in an instant. She lifted her hands in the air in an attempt to focus. Banshee, she thought, send it to Banshee. Banshee being the poster of a message inviting collaboration hidden inside a weird ad for medicine or something on crownet. Cellissee liked this Banshee's style.
Aaaand I have finally struck gold. I'm a girl of my word so here ya go. Straight from Canada.ca

[AGAINST THE CURE]
[for_peace][/for_peace]

Timing: Early morning hours of the 9-16-17

Doc glanced at Lizzie and gave her a ‘**** my life’ look, as he replied to Aden, “You want to do this right? Great. Shut the **** up. Listen. Do not talk. We do not know anything concrete about this cure. We have pieces of emails. Not whole emails. Pieces.”

He paused, as he tried to express his thoughts in a calm manner. Aden was the -last- person Doc wanted to go anywhere near the location where experiments were on going, even if Aden knew where it was. Doc didn’t even know the location,..yet.

“We need to reconnoiter, and that means.. Loud **** ups, like you Aden, need to sit out until we know more. If and when more information comes out, and we need meat shields, You will be the first person I call. In the meantime, Aden.. and listen carefully,” He spoke slowly and clearly, “Clean your weapons, make sure you have plenty of ammo, and then go do what I pay you for. Your ******* job. And do not discuss this with anyone.. Except your sire. Do you understand?

“Because, If there is a cure, it could be valuable. We do not need to jump to conclusions based on .. what could be mis-information. It could be a ******* trap for all we know. So, do your job and keep your ******* mouth shut.”

Re: A Cure? (Open)

Her mind was like an open door, taking in yet not letting out as her thoughts danced along the lines of the cyber world. Too many notions and possibles and not enough solid facts were being exchanged. Everyone seemed to have a view point on the matter, but no one had an absolute.

This was getting her nowhere fast.

She wanted to reach out, but to who? Only Alexandrea had spoken to her. No one else had sought her out. The price one pays for being ‘out of sight’ she supposed. Hell, most of them probably thought she was dead. Either that or working on her moon tan on some island somewhere. Actually the idea of being on some island elsewhere was not sounding like a bad idea right now. Probably would not be all that hard to arrange.

It was tempting, but she dismissed the idea. She had ran from a major problem only once in her life. Fleeing from the cops did not count as a major problem. It was something she learned how to do as a child and was a necessity for survival. No, one stood in front of their problems and dared them to cross the line. The entire ‘cure’ thing was rapidly coming to a silent boil now. A location had been mentioned several times. Supposedly the place where all the weird science was taking place.

With a lack of additional information to digest, the gypsy concluded it was probably best to go see the place for herself. Look around and see who and what was hanging out. Her first impulse was to go in her owl form, but that would only work for the exterior of the place. Hard to explain a full grown snow owl inside a lab if discovered. No, she would go as herself, and then if there were windows above to work with she could always fly up and spy a bit.

.Absently she reached out and caught the edge of her altar and gave herself a push. She floated to the door still in her lotus pose. She was not quite ready to break the fragile sense of calm she had achieved by doing this just yet so she simply nudged herself along out of the garden and into her apartment. Once she neared her bedroom she stood up finally and entered.

In the back of her closet the gypsy slid a wall panel open and reluctantly retrieved her weapons. She rarely used them anymore, but they were a necessary thing in what she had decided to do. As she had been taught, Zodiac broke down the gun and re-assembled it to be sure it was in working order. Once satisfied, she snapped a clip into place and dropped it and several reloads into the oversized should bag/purse she always carried with her. The same with the short sword she owned. She had long blades as well, but in close quarters she found the smaller one to work better with her size. Besides, it was easier to hide. She slipped it from its sheath and inspected it for wear and tear.

”Of course it will come down to violence and bloodshed,” she sighed. Her goal was strictly to recon the place. Observe and if necessary any combat would be defensive on her part. One of the other reasons she felt being a vampire was a bad idea for her. She could not get her head around mass murder for no other reason that ‘Because I can’. Granted, she could not claim total innocence on the subject of taking a life, but she didn’t make it a full time occupation as some vampires did. In her mind she simply did not fit the profile of what a vampire’s mindset should be. It would explain how always seemed to be bashing heads with so many other night feeders.

She simply felt she did not make a ‘good’ vampire when she compared herself to the majority at large. Or, if she was doing it right, she was in a very small minority.

”Ah, face it, Sugar Pop, you never fit in when you were alive so why should un-life be any different?” she reminded herself as she added a few other items to her bag. Zodiac sat down and laced up her running shoes tightly. She needed stealth and speed for this, not CLICK-CLICK-CLICK! How could anyone be stealthy in high heels was beyond her. Some did manage it, but not her. ”Put me in a pair of spiked heels and you’ll hear me coming a mile away.”

As she headed to leave, she put her fingers to her lips and whistled. Her cat appeared as if from nowhere and looked up at her. ”Let’s go, baby girl, we got work to do.”

The large black feline fell into step with her as they left the apartment.

Flipping through open tabs yielded no new information as each of the boards had fallen silent. The red-head sighed as she pushed away from the computer to grab a refill on her water. The probability of this situation ending well was not high at all; the initial siege had automatically saw to that. The military, and government, rarely took well to being attacked. They’d be lucky if the military presence in the city only doubled at the end of this. Her phone beeping signaled the arrival of Azraeth’s reply, which she stopped to read.

[text]At the least, we’ll be looking at an increased military presence. I have no doubt about that given how well the military takes to being attacked and the fact they’re billing this as a terrorist attack. We could be looking at all-out war or a quarantine of the entire city depending on how things develop from here on out. It’s disappointing that people jumped in headfirst without stopping to think of the consequences for the community and without having a plan. I agree a town hall meeting would have been ideal, but after the disaster that just occurred with the one that should have been Friday night, I don’t think many would have felt comfortable gathering for another. Ripper really did a number there – very few are going to be able to trust him for quite some time. The community is going to have to unite… not in the ‘lets all be friends and sing around a campfire’ way … but as you said… a unifying voice. They don’t need leadership so much as a solid plan to deal with crises as they arise; like calling a meeting to decide what the majority feels should happen. Reacting on the fly like this is going to lead to an irreversible disaster, I fear. If humans can develop a cure so quickly… what’s to keep them from finding out about the rip in the fade and working to find a way to close that?

She hit submit and was about to slide her phone back into her pocket. A moment later she was scrolling through her contacts, adding Doc and Elizabeth to a group message. She was going to send about the same thing to both anyway and it was an easier way to keep track of the messages between them all, if they chose to reply – assuming they were in a position to do so. With the chaos, there was no guarantee of anything, but she did at least want them to know she was thinking of them.

[text]Please be careful and try to stay safe.

This time, after hitting submit, her phone did find its way into her pocket. Setting her empty glass into the kitchen sink, she sighed. Serena still hadn’t returned so either the red-head had misread her wraith, there was a lot to take in or the wraith had been captured. Given she could still feel the connection with the spirit, she could discount banishment. It was looking like she’d be heading east to the facility sooner than she had planned.
