Phone Calls

Post by Penny Parker (DELETED 8460) »

“Hey, you. How are things there? Have you found an apartment, yet? Please - please give me some juicy bits, because the Gods know I am bored and can use it.” Melinda’s voice caused Penny to drop down on her bed with a smile, as she cradled he iPhone against her cheek. It was easy to tell that her high priestess missed her as the older woman’s words took on a sort of sing song rhythm to it.

It had been only a week since the last phone call between the two. Penny had sworn on her life that she would never miss their weekly calls. So far, she had kept her promise.

Falling back against the bed, her long braids sprawled out behind her like a crown. The millennial quickly jumped into the natural cadence of their conversation. The two women had the type of relationship where time held no jurisdiction between them. They could go for months without talking (not that Melinda would let her get away with that) and it would be as if it had only been an hour.

“They are actually pretty good. Hold on, let’s do face time.” Penny could use seeing a familiar face and within a few swipes with her finger, she was looking into the face of her dearest friend. “There we go. So yeah, I haven’t found a place, yet. There really is not a big selection in places to rent around here.”

“Well that sucks, if you need to come back…” Melinda figured it was worth a shot, but also knew it would be ineffectual.

“I know. My dad is still not happy about it. I don’t know…” Her shoulders lifted up as she continued. “Oh, I may have a job. “Her voice lifted up with the hope that she felt when she even mentioned it.

“That’s cool. Where? “

“At a bar called Serpentine, as a bartender. I’m pretty excited. After looking it up, it looks pretty cool. The hours are crappy, like usual with most bars, but hell that leaves my days open. I figured I could get in with a studio and teach Yoga, also. You know, like in Toronto.” Penny started to twist at one of her braids as she talked.

“I’ll light a candle for you and get the others to do so, too.” Melinda understood why Penny wanted to stay behind in Harper Rock, but she couldn’t hide the fact that she missed her like crazy and had hoped a little that she would have changed her mind, but since she didn’t, she was going to do everything she could to be supportive.

“Oh thanks. Yeah, I ran out the other day and bought a bunch of ritual supplies that I was running low on. There are actually a good number of pagan shops within walking distance. It’s actually rather refreshing.” As she spoke, she heard knocking at Melinda’s door, while her redheaded friend looked over her shoulder, toward her door.

“I need to go, there’s someone here.” She turned back to face the screen.

“Okay. Take care, Melinda. Tell everyone I said hi and that I expect a visit from them. No excuses.” Penny kissed the screen and then hit the end call on her screen.

"I don't know what it is about this place, Melinda. But I can feel a certain change with in me."

"You aren't going to sprout fangs and howl at the moon are you, kid?" Melinda laughed. She couldn't help but tease the younger woman.

Penny obligingly lifted her upper lip and showed her the whites of her top teeth to the camera on her phone. "Nope, I don't think so." The young witch laughed. "But seriously." She paused as she tried to pull together the best words to describe what she meant without sounding too weird. "I really can't explain it but...it is as if I." Penny tugged on one of her braids. "I am becoming stronger. Like the other day I was staring at a rather large stream that I had come across while I was walking in the woods. I just knew I could jump it. I had this weird confidence of just knowing. And I did. I jumped, clearing the stream with no difficulty."

"You are excited about jumping a stream?" Melinda didn't want to seem rude, but she really wasn't understanding what her protege was trying to say.

"The stream was probably a good 3 meters wide and I didn't just barely clear it - I over jumped it."

The older witch's brows raised and she paused as she tried to picture the length of the jump. "Okay that's a little weird."

"I am going to go out tonight, before work and test out how high and far I can jump."

"Just don't be calling me and asking for me to make you a spandex suit and a cape."

Penny laughed. "No worries, especially since you know, spandex and capes are no longer the rage. I prefer leather."

"Leather I can do." Melinda laughed. She was happy that Penny had called, she missed her little braided sidekick. "So anything else you wanna tell your old high priestess?"

"Just that I miss you and you need to come visit me." Her voice shifted to a more melancholy tone. "Anyway, I need to get going if i am going to make it to the Yoga class I want to attend."

"Okay, girlie. You stay safe and call me tomorrow. I love and miss you."

"I love and miss you, too."
