Gauntlet and BttD

Post by Robert Pratt »

Just looking at the wiki and the tactics page and messing with settings and Blake and had a question for those with more experience in this area.

Has anyone ever seen a battle switch from guns to melee halfway through?

Cause as an example;

CC was set to stongly prefer melee, attacked Blake who didn't have a gun equipped, and the whole battle ran with guns. I'd have thought that one would have been able to close and move to melee?

Yeah... all my gals are the same and I don't recall seeing it either in PVP, just with NPC's but will test around some with whomever is hanging in the gauntlet after the raid. ;D

Partly why I'm asking if anyone has seen it. Especially with the hypothetical updates. Cause those statted for melee seem a bit fucked right now. lol

I looked through my archives and had 16 battle reports saved from a few weeks ago, before any changes. So... may not help but....

8 with Madison. No swords ever used.

8 with Odin. Six all guns and 2 all swords.

Zero battles with both guns and swords.

All were done in the gauntlet.

The one with the higher dexterity is supposed to have the initiative in this sort of thing. That being said, sometimes a character cannot make it inside because of all the gun shooting.

I think out of all of Shamus' spars, he might have fought with a sword three times? So I am not sure about whether there is a bug or not.

Yeh, you read the battle tactics page it says that all battles start ranged unless both parties are set to strongly prefer melee. Only then will it start melee.

But that implies that the battle is then going to try and get in close to then move to melee if the one strongly prefering melee has the higher dex. However, I've never, ever seen a battle switch and wondered if the bigger charries with more experience in the gauntlet had.

Like the example I made in the first post. CC has the higher Dex - only by 1 though, Blake didn't have a gun, but she still ran the whole battle with her 3 in Firearms. lol.

It just seems that with the way things are running - melee fighters are totally screwed in these things. :(

Melee fighters are the saps bringing a knife to a gun fight. They're fab against beasties who charge, but against a vamp preferring a gun, they're at a huge, obvious disadvantage. I'm pretty sure that's the trade off.

I've never seen a switch.
One or the other
Why are you taking me through troubled waters, I asked? Because your enemies cannot swim, he replied.

I don't think I'd call them saps. I get what you're trying to say, but I would have to disagree.

If CC is going up against someone who doesn't have a gun on them and does have a sword, she's going to charge straight in - and I presume they would do the same.
If CC is up against someone who has much lower dex than her, she's going to charge straight in, close the gap, get shot and not care just to get in there with the sword.
Even against someone with higher dex, she's going to activate celerity and try and charge right on in there to get up close.
If CC is forced into a gun battle, she's going to shoot for the legs to cripple them, so she can get right on in there and engage them in melee.

I would presume that the above is the same for all melee fighters. They're not going to piddle about with a gun if they don't have to. Problem is, the code doesn't seem to be allowing for any switch from one to the other from what people are saying here. Hence, wondering if it's a bug.
