Lucky Charms [Nix]

Post by Strix (DELETED 5285) »

The green beer was churning around Phoebe’s stomach like the inside of a washing machine, and she stumbled, the hem of her skirt (which was obscenely short to begin with) creeping up her thigh to reveal the apex of a emerald green pair of panties, with a lucky shamrock right over the… well, nevermind. The point is that Phoebe was hammered, she was stumbling all over herself, and despite looking hot as hell, she hadn’t found anyone to go home with and was rapidly losing her ability to rut like she was getting paid for it. She stuck her hand out, the flesh of her palm colliding with a brick wall, cool and coarse under her soft and sweaty fingers. At least she had some stability on the walk home. What street was her hotel on again?

Harper Rock U had the best St. Patrick’s day celebrations. It would have to, what with students dying left and right of mysterious incidences. So when Shailene called her up and asked her to drive down together for the long weekend, Phoebe wasn’t about to decline. Their college wasn’t doing anything to celebrate the holiday and Phoebe couldn’t handle another day in lecture. The semester was half over and already she was bored to tears. At 25, Phoebe should have been well into her university degree by now. Instead, she had changed her specialty so many times she’d accomplished just about nothing in the many years she’d spent behind a desk.

A gunshot from the window of a beat-up sedan distracted the inebriated coed from her lamentations about the tribulations of higher education. Just then, her heel caught in the sidewalk, and she yelped, her mind spinning with accusations that Harper Rock should probably spend less money on the dark and creepy factor and put more funds into finding their lost students and fixing their crappy roadways. In her drunken stupor, the fall seemed to take more than its cursory ten seconds, slow motion blurring her vision but not enough to ignore the fact that a huge hunk of concrete was heading right for her forehead. Joy.

Her head cracked against the sidewalk with enough force rattle her brains about and blind Phoebe for just long enough that she couldn’t push herself up. In that time, the scraping of nails against concrete had missed her purview. What roused Phoebe out of her disoriented blackout was the latch of long, jagged, and razor-sharp teeth on her bare ankle. The teeth sliced through her skin like butter, and she barely felt the initial laceration. What had her screaming was the burning, in her blood, through her tendons, like someone had poured poison straight into her bloodstream and skipped the formalities of kicking her *** first.

The assault didn’t stop. The ten second fall she’d just experienced, as long as it had felt, had nothing on the repeated slashing and clawing of her tender skin. Eventually, Phoebe’s screaming stopped, and she simply stared up in the sky, with blank, glassy eyes and a mouth wide open, waiting to be devoured completely and die.

The last thought that went through her mind was almost too morbid to repeat. “Blast me lucky charms,” she thought, “I’m magically delicious.”

The last thing Nix really wanted to do was deal with college kids on their last drunken binge before finals. Like clockwork, the kegs had rolled out Friday past and from what she could see through the first floor windows, most of the houses on college row seemed strewn with passed out, partially naked bodies. The ones that weren't blackout drunk were hanging out over upper-story balconies, defying all Darwinian principles with their continued existence.

Why she'd wandered anywhere near the university on the night of faux Irish merriment was completely beyond her. Every step seemed to invite more lewd motions from the balconies above, which inevitably spilled enough green beer to splash her on the sidewalk. They were mostly inebriated frat boys out to get it on with anything they could find. It was late and they were running out of both beer and options.

Truth was, they were probably running out of beer because they kept spilling it over themselves and innocent bystanders. Who cared if it was past 3am? Giving a **** wasn't high on Nix's priority list at the moment. She just wanted to get out of dodge, sneak off into the Stag Heath slums and snatch up whatever items she could find. As the music and cat calls faded into the distance, she couldn't keep the relief flooding her system at bay. There was nothing worse than drunken frat boys.

Except maybe a fadebeast tearing into a screaming, drunken woman. The Shadow froze in her tracks for a split second, staring at the fadebeast's twisted form hulking over its victim. Once that moment of shock had passed - normally the beasts weren't nearly so overt in their killing - Nix rushed over. Although it would have seemed altruistic to anyone watching, she craved the fight more than any kind of heroic deed. From what she could see as she approached, the ugly thing had gnawed the woman's leg down to the bone.

By the time she arrived, the screaming had stopped - never a good sign. Not like anyone ever paid much mind to screams in this part of town. Nonetheless, Nix dealt with the beast in short order, leaving a twisted pile of bones and blackened scraps of meat. Easy enough.

Approaching the prone, bleeding woman with her skirt hiked way too far up, Nix wasn't entirely sure what to do. She supposed rolling her onto her back just to see if she was still conscious would be a good start. Using the tip of her boot, she hooked her foot under the woman's shoulder and flipped her onto her back none too gently.

Whether or not this woman was alive didn't register at all. The injuries faded into the periphery as her face came into focus. Phoenix recognized that face - she was older now, but the memories of barely legal bar hops were still vivid. Things had definitely changed, but she'd have recognized this woman anywhere.

"Phoebe!?" Finally, Nix knelt down and shook the woman, trying to break through her shock.

When Phoebe stirred the next morning, she had a pounding headache. Attributing it to the disgusting amount of liquor she’d imbibed last night, she groaned in her state of half-sleep and fumbled around for her bedside table and the aspirin she’d laid out ahead of time for exactly this reason. She would have left two tablets next to a big glass of tepid water; it was the only hangover remedy she’d found that worked. Instead, her hand fell on empty air, and she whined, because who moved her stupid bedside table?

Phoebe rolled over, loathe to leave the warm burrito she’d made in her bed simply to scour up some headache medication. She assumed she’d have at least two feet on either side of her, and she assumed wrong. Phoebe’s body slammed on the ground, and she elbowed herself in the diaphragm, because the couch that she’d been nestled on was nowhere near as big as her bed at home. “What the actual fu—“

The statement wasn’t finished because her voice was so raw and hoarse that it stopped whatever thought she’d had to vocalize and caused her to grip her throat. It was then that she noticed the blood on her hands, caking her fingers, in the crevices of her manicure. Her hands felt gritty with it, as if it had dried over sand instead of skin. She pushed herself up on the floor, or tried to, stumbling forward as she did because her leg had literally been chewed up and spit out and all that was left was a piece of bone and stringy tendons holding her foot on. She collapsed on the couch and stared down at herself, as if she honestly had no clue whether she was alive or dead.

Upon closer examination, she could see that her leg was rapidly knitting itself together, fibrous sinew weaving its way through muscle and skin and covering the bone. It was like watching a science documentary, or some kind of creepy fiction film set so far in the future that Dr. Crusher only has to scan you with an iPad and your booboos are all better. She rocked in her seat on the couch, uncaring that she was coated in blood and her clothes stuck to her body, or that the couch would probably never be clean again. Finally, she found her voice.

“What in the **** happened to me?”

After determining the broken heap of a person lying on the pavement was still alive, Nix kind of snapped out of it. At least enough to realize that Phoebe was going to die of either shock or blood loss or who knew what else if she didn't do something soon. Even if Nix did drop her off in the nearest emergency room, and by some miracle she did survive, by the look of that mangled leg, an amputation was likely in order.

The thought made her wince - from what she remembered of Phoebe, life on a crutch or in a wheelchair would break her. Which really only left her one morally acceptable choice - turning her. Despite the screaming, the area remained deserted. Nobody wanted to deal with some stranger's problems around here. Especially on St. Patty's Weekend. At least it meant there was no one around to witness what the Shadow was about to do. A quick slice of her wrist and the wound was pressed to Phoebe's unresponsive lips. After about 20 seconds of bleeding, the shallow wound healed on its own and Nix pulled back - usually, that was enough to do the trick.

With a sigh, Nix carefully scooped the woman up and called them both home. Once on the apartment's threshold, she dumped the woman on the couch. Phoebe was still leaking blood, but it wouldn't take much longer for that slow trickle to run dry and the changes to take effect.

Hours later, Nix lay stretched out in bed, laptop sitting beside her. She'd gotten bored sitting around waiting, so she'd changed into sweatpants, paced some, and then collapsed onto the bed in the wee hours of the morning. She'd taken to surfing the web until the loud thud alerted the redhead to the fact that her friend had woken. Springing to her feet, Nix bolted to the living room just in time to catch the last of the woman's muttered complaint or protest or... question.

"Uh... You had a run-in with a thing," she explained, not wanting to overload her friend just yet. "It beat you up pretty bad, so I brought you back here to rest up... And I did something. Otherwise they'd probably have had to amputate your legs." She added the last bit in a rush, awkwardly shuffling her feet against the area rug for a moment before slipping over to the kitchen. "You must be thirsty."

Without waiting for a reply, Nix busied herself with dumping the contents of a bag labelled AB- into two mugs as discretely as possible. No need for Phoebe to see what she was about to be offered. She shoved the mugs in the microwave with a deranged little smile. 30 seconds later, the microwaved dinged and she carried both to the living room. One mug was set next to Phoebe while she sipped the other, hoping the woman would imitate without too much thought.

Phoebe picked up the mug and took a sip, not bothering to look into the mug. The beverage was thick and creamy and warm, but had a tangy, bitter taste. It invigorated her, and she didn’t complain when she looked down into the cup and saw a dark red, nearly black liquid in the basin. Instead she licked her lips, nodded once, and took another sip. She’d figure it out later. It didn’t taste like blood to her, despite its appearance, and it was really good. Probably a new kind of energy drink or something, with how fast it was hitting her system.

“I had a run-in with a thing?” Phoebe mimicked, taking a glance at her mostly-healed ankle, which didn’t seem too beat u p in the least. There were just a few scratches and some bite marks, hardly cause for amputation. “Obviously you kicked its ***, I’m fine now.” She sipped her drink again, taking a long, heady swallow and smacking her lips.

“This is good, where did you get it?” Unable to stop herself from the questions that bubbled out from her lips, she leaned forward, balancing her elbows on her knees. “Where have you been? I haven’t seen you in a few years. Did you get a job here? Why didn’t you even bother to say goodbye to all of us back home? What the ****, Alicia?”

Phoebe shook her head, starting to get angry. Those were the answers she really wanted, anyway. Whatever happened to her, the pounding headache, the body aches, her ankle, it could wait. She was probably hung over as **** and she'd rebound. The energy drink was doing wonders for her; a real miracle cure. She really wanted to know why one of her closest friends had just taken off without a word and left her to figure **** out on her own.

Shifting awkwardly, Nix continued sipping from her mug, clearly at a loss for what to say right then. She could have just spilled the whole story, but she really didn't want poor Phoebe's head to explode. Or implode - whatever it was that happened to people with too much to process. She tapped her foot against the carpet, trying to figure out where to start. From the beginning, of course, but when the **** was the beginning? Priorities. Nobody'd called her Alicia in a long time. Not since Malachai had seen her driver's license, as far as she remembered.

"I left because that guy I was seeing - you remember Jake? - he got into some trouble with one of his stupid gang people. Apparently he lost them a shitload of money on a crack deal. Wanted me to play high-end hooker for a while to pay off the debt." She paused, lips pressed into a thin, thoughtful line. "I decked him in the face. Twice. I think I broke his nose. He pulled a gun on me, threatened to kill me, then I got the **** out of there. Came here. Got a job. I'm sorry I never called... Figured it was safest to cut all ties, and then **** happened and I... I guess I forgot."

She shrugged, lowering the mug to the table. It was the most honest she'd been about her past in the past few years. It felt good to let it out. Her eyes flitted to the window, watching the car headlights skittering around the darkness six stories below. They weren't having to have this awkward conversation, so why the **** was she? Though she had a feeling she was about to face a barrage of questions about **** happening, so she switched the topic back to something safe.

Nodding to the mug on the table, Phoenix sighed. "It's lifeblood." Yeah, that sounded like some energy drink company would choose as a brand. "That thing you had a run in with - it hurt you bad before I kicked it's *** back to where it came from. But I fixed the damage, more or less - you'll be fine, but the fix is permanent." Pausing, she tried to figure out how she wanted to word this, and came up blank. "Some of the people living here are special - vampires - and... well... I'm one. And so are you. That's why you healed so quickly."

Yep, she just let that drop. Phoebe was smart - she'd figure it out soon enough. Nix, for her part, offered a faint, sardonic smile as she picked up the mug and took another long sip. "AB negative."

As she listened to Alicia’s story, she nodded, and smiled, and even pumped her fist in the air when Lich had told her she’d decked Jake in the face. She’d never liked Jake. He was too arrogant, and not in a good way. He wasn’t even hot. Even still, her eyes narrowed at the idea that one of her closest pals had forgotten her. Even a phone call, or a text message, or an email would have sufficed, enough to say, “Hey dude I’m not actually dead and by the way I still have the shirt I borrowed from you four years ago.” It would have been enough to satiate Phoebe, at least.

As Alicia continued, however, Phoebe tolerated the brand name of her energy drink, though she suspected Alicia’s ‘fix’ wasn’t as foolproof as she might have initially thought. For one thing, Phoebe felt like ****. For another, the other woman had almost no medical knowledge that Phoebe was aware of. She chose not to respond, right up until the word vampires came up in casual conversation.

She started laughing. Not loud, mocking laughter but nervous, awkward, you-know-in-your-gut-that-it’s-not-a-joke laughter. She covered her face with a hand, leaning back against the couch. “Oh, ****, girl. Either you’re serious or, as usual, meth is a hell of a drug. Vampires? Me?” She looked down at the liquid in her mug. Sure, it could pass for blood in color and consistency, but it didn’t taste anything like blood and surely it would have made her barf if she’d ingested enough of human blood.

After many minutes, her laughter had subsided, and she shook her head, red curls bouncing. She and Alicia had looked somewhat similar, something that had bonded them together when they first met. Body type aside, when Phoebe wasn’t exaggerating her appearance with makeup, their facial features and bone structure was strikingly similar. Finally, Phoebe set her mug aside, her appetite for the beverage lost, and pushed her upper lip toward her nose with both index fingers.

“No fangs.” she slurred, before dropping her lip and wiping her hands on her legs. “Unless you have some bonafide proof, I’m going with meth.”

All things considered, Phoebus had taken that well. Now would be the fun part... How exactly would she show her old friend without actually sending her screaming out the door. Those honey brown eyes flitted to the balcony - it was closer and she really didn't want to see Phoebe take a nose dive off there. The high-pitched, semi-serious laughter wasn't promising, but it was all she had to work with.

"Meth," she repeated, clearly amused. "You should finish the blood; it'll help. You want proof, look at your legs. When I found you, they'd been gnawed to the bone. I could see your ******* bones, Phoebe." Though that probably wouldn't be enough either. She could have gone with the theatrics. She could have covered the room in darkness. She could have flitted from place to place faster than the eye could follow... But instead, she simply shrugged. There really wasn't much glamorous about this life.

With a sigh, she opened her mouth just enough so that she could feel her canines lengthen into twin daggers and dimple her lower lip. After a moment, she closed her mouth and the fangs retracted. "See? Meth doesn't make your teeth all pointy."

She sat there, stick-straight, and decided that fangs were pretty anticlimactic. "We're not the blood sucky things like they have in movies. Well... the blood sucky thing is true, but there's way more to it than that. We have other cool powers, too! I... can turn into a fox when I want. And I can summon spirits... I can move super fast." With a wave of her hand, she sent the shadows in the room writhing. "And I can talk to you in your head," she added, putting her telepathic abilities to good use.

All in all, Phoebe didn't really freak out. Alicia had fangs, though they could be prosthetics, but the telepathy was pretty cool and she didn't figure the other woman had time to put a chip in her head. She pursed her lips, weighing her options. Phoebe was highly superstitious and believed in all sorts of creepy crawlies, from ghosts to demons and witches, and she loved reading about the occult. So it wasn't a huge stretch for her, though she was still skeptical.

"Fine," she conceded, picking up her drink again. Blood or not, it was making her feel better. "Let's say I believe you. Temporarily. What does that mean for me?"

It was a legitimate question. Even if her legs were chewed to the bone, they weren't fully healed yet. And she had to go back home sometime; she had no idea how long she was unconscious or even if her stuff was still at her hotel room, or if it had been stolen and sold for drugs. She raised both brows, letting Alicia take the lead.

The redhead beamed, taking Phoebe's "Let's say I believe you" for an immediate, and even eager, "I believe you!" With a nod of approval, Nix pushed herself to her feet and started towards the door, only to pivot back to face her friend after a handful of steps. "Can you even walk?" Considering the state of the woman's leg only a few hours before, it was a damn valid question. She should have been far more concerned as Phoebe's once best friend, but she knew how well vampires healed; Phoebe would be fine.

"I was going to take you out zombie hunting, but I think it might be best if you rest a bit. We can go later once you're not looking like a zombie yourself." Circling back around the sofa, Nix went to the far cabinet, fishing around for a few moments before producing a myriad of weapons. "I'm going to have to teach you how to fight... and feed..." she muttered as she picked through the stash, finally choosing an appropriate pair of sword and firearm. With a bright smile, the Shadow brought them to set on the coffee table in front of Phoebe. "You'll need these later, but for now, rest..."
