Coroner's Log

‘Heart’

The symbol stood bold against the black of the triangular wood piece sending a roar of cheers through the crowded room. Though sympathies swept the floor soon after, the adrenaline fueled energies remained for those who would live to see another day. Meanwhile, the unlucky soul of the night would be led into the back, through the rubber flapped curtains and into th--

“Surya, prep the patient.”

The press of dread was always cold against his back.

He’d learned not to hesitate.

He’d learned to move.

His dark gaze stared over the forlorn man’s shoulder as he reached a gloved hand to guide him forward.

Preparation was dull.

As always they were told to count backwards from one hundred.

They never did.

“What is a boy doing playing this godforsaken game?”

Surya’s hand paused at the unexpected question. He turned back to the middle aged Indonesian man shoulders rising as he leaned forward in his seat. Another pause and he was on his feet to walk the distance from chair to patient.

“You will lose one day. We all do in….the e….nd...”

“Surya, stand by and take notes, eh? You won’t learn this in those fancy American schools.”

“You look tired, Surya.”

The quiet observation brought him from his quiet contemplations. The room shifted to a near reflection of him seated across the small café table. The quiet static of his mind was quickly overtaken by the shops low key murmurs. Grocery lists, worries over finances, crushes and travels scattered the blood drenched memories of actions prior. Surya’s hands flexed finding that even in the summer humidity; the digits were chilled to the bone.

“I guess I have not been sleeping well.” He explained giving a shake of his head. A short chuckle as if remembering something funny. He hadn’t really. Smiling made her stop worrying.

Sure enough, the worry line that they both shared smoothed out. Shinta’s lips turned up into a gentle smile as she shook her head. Fine strands of ebony made a quick dash to obscure her face. As always it looked wet, and behaved that way as well. As much as his sister complained about her lack of volume, he could see the downside to such ‘limp’ hair.

It was perfect.

Like her.

“What am I going to do with you? Honestly, if you can’t take care of yourself here, how will I trust you to abroad?”

“You trust me, Shinta?”

“With my life.”

The wet streak of tires against the pavement was still fresh by the time he woke. The air was cold and harsh against the back of his throat offering a reprieve from the inflammation but a headlong dive into the brittle cracking--the beginnings of strep. He swallowed against the discomfort as he wiped a clammy wrist against his saturated bottom lip. The world swam with flashes of colors and shapes that echoed with memories of a previous struggle. His heart quivered in his chest as if afraid to go about its involuntary work of circulating his blood. Was it safe to live now, it seemed to ask as he took in his one shuddering breath after another. They had left him alive. His too wide eyes stared unblinkingly, sure that the turtle paced headlights fading in the distance would stop at any time to deliver to the final blow to his worthless existence. No witnesses. No leads. No one to report he was missing. Sinewy arms wrapped around a tiny middle tightly as he hunched in on himself. His lips pursed and released slipping wetly against one another before his cheeks constricted to push the warm fluid filling his mouth out. There was something different about the way his teeth fit against the inside of his cheek, and how the blood lapped against his gums.

Something was missing.

Before a tentative hand could press to his mouth a generic jingle from a cell phone shattered what little nerves he had left. Surya collapsed to his knees. His arms lifted to cover his head as if they could do any better than they had before. Once again, he was sure his number was up only to find otherwise.

A trembling hand pulled an unfamiliar phone from his back pocket. The ID read that the number was blocked. Against his better judgment, he picked up.

“Ah, you’re awake. I am very pleased, Surya.” Michael’s voice was cool on the other end of the line. “Don’t bother showing up tomorrow…for a while in fact. The doctors have informed me that you’ll need a few weeks to recover so think of this as your sick leave, eh?”

“Wha—argh…” Surya’s grip went slack. His hands moved from the discarded phone to cover his bleeding oral cavity.

“Your money will be at your home. Don’t spend it all in one place.”
