Rebecca thought she had been prepared. It had been almost a decade since she joined the RCMP, and she was good at what she did. She was good at everything she did.

Rebecca Davis had been the type of kid that made everyone else jealous. She had graduated top of her class in high school (after skipping 7th grade) and finished university in three years. While she was not stunningly gorgeous, Rebecca was cute enough that she got her share of attention, which she mostly ignored. She sang in the school's choir and played the cello in the orchestra. She had also lettered in varsity soccer as one of the most feared midfielders in the conference. Rebecca had earned the nickname "Jinx" her sophomore year after members of opposing teams found themselves "jinxed" with various bruises, cuts, and cleat marks. Jinx had no concern for her own physical well-being. A bit of a daredevil, she climbed trees (and roofs), rode an ATV, and went hunting with her brother and dad.

All her life, she planned on being a doctor. She was smart enough, able enough, and dedicated enough. "Failure" was never part of Rebecca's vocabulary.

Everything came crashing down when her older brother was killed. Adam had stopped in a convenience store after work that day. He and their father worked for the same construction company, but John Davis, their father, was a foreman and had to stay late that evening for a meeting, so Adam had some time to kill. Adam never noticed the shifty figures skulking near the chips; he came in, got his soda, and went to the register. Unfortunately, members of a rival gang did notice the shifty figures and round upon round was fired upon the shop. One of the gang members escaped; another was injured. The clerk, however, is still in a coma and Adam was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rebecca had been a junior in high school. She missed almost two weeks, and was a completely different person when she returned. She had been at least somewhat sociable before his death, but completely ignored any friends she had to study. Rebecca read everything she could about law enforcement, from textbooks to how-to books on self defense, from the dry law manuals to true-crime stories. Her senior year, she dropped science courses for law, and instead of pre-med, she majored in criminology.

Just as she had in high school, Rebecca graduated top of her class in university and was readily accepted as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Contrary to what the name might imply, Rebecca had never needed to ride a horse for her job, nor was the work always dignified. "Canadian" and "Police" fit pretty well, though.

After paying her dues as a rookie, Rebecca was moved to the gang task force, and she threw herself wholeheartedly into her job. She would avenge Adam and clean up the streets so that no one else would die like he did.

One day, she was approached with an assignment. It seemed that gang kingpin Emanuel Broussard and all of his gang's top members were killed. Rumors of their deaths flooded the chatter, but bodies were never found. There would be a vacuum of power in Harper Rock, a city already known for its violence. Would Jinx be willing to join the investigation?

Of course.
It’s just another day, there’s murder in the air
It drags me when I walk, I smell it everywhere
